whats this gunk on my valves?

My valve cover is off, i don't know the name of the parts I"m looking at, but I'm looking at what you see under the cover.
everything looks really clean except the second set from the right (the driver's side) have brown gunky deposits on the top ?rockers?
should I just leave this alone? or do i try to clean it somehow? i'm worried about getting any crud loose in there

I have pics if I can get them posted tonight I will. but I was hoping to have the cover on after work. will check back, thanks

Sludge? If it is, you need to get it cleaned up and the rest of the engine checked.
