Detection Mat Sensor (M52 80 15RC) SRS / Air bag problem

Hello. I have a 2005 MINI BMW convertible R52. The air bag error, and the SRS passenger light came on. very annoying, and dangerous, since the passenger air bag won't deploy in case of an accident. I looked everywhere for a quick fix, at no avail. They quoted me at a private garage over $1,000 to repair the problem. I was afraid to ask at the dealer, since it would be even more expensive. Well, after almost loosing it I found the solution. It turns out that the problem of the seat mat sensor in the passenger side of not only MINIS, but lots of BMW models, has a recall ! This recall came up in 2015 and covers vehicles all the way from back 2004. I called BMW Canada and gave them my VIN number. and Voila ! I got an appointment for next week to replace it free of charge, since indeed my car was cover under this recall.
this is the recall notice reference number:

Recall Campaign No. 2015-147: Front Passenger Seat Occupant Detection Mat Sensor (M52 80 15RC)

my advice, call BMW and ask them by providing your VIN, chances are you are covered !

Yeah the 1st gen got a recall. Mine (2nd gen) only got an extended warranty. Fortunately I was still able to get it replaced for free!

I had a similar prob w/ one of mine. It was replaced the same day, free of charge, never had an issue since although they told me they had problems installing one and doing the programming to work.... no idea why, it was just an off hand statement. In the future to be proactive, you can go online and run the VIN for recalls. Unfortunately with used cars, moves ect manufacturers just don't get letters to every owner. Dealerships do honor the free fix for a few years though
