Flat tire light will NOT go out

Hi all,

I used to have a leaky tire and I reset the light many times. Now the light comes on when turning the key to "ON" after a couple of seconds there is a chime. I have tried to turn it out the owners manual way and the dealers way (turn the key to on then press the button then start her up and drive off) That USED to work but now it is like the button is not working, no reaction at all from the button. The led still lights up with the lights. the button DOES ohm out to 0 when pressed and open when not
I have disconected the battery for over 6 hours I have disconected and then shorted the Battery cables together overnight (dealer suggestion) Oh and yes my tire pressure is the same on all 4 tires. I have also reset the ecu using the code 21 through the odometer. No other lights on or other issues.

I have been at battle for more than 2 months now and I just hate to drive 435 miles to the dealer.... Someone help me before I get out the electrical tape!!!!

Flat tire light will NOT go out

Try this:

Turn the key to the last position prior to engaging the starter.
Next hold the FTM button and release when it flashes.
Start the car and drive away smiling because the FTM has been reset.

If that has not cured the problem it's most likely that a speed sensor has failed.
Sometimes it's just dirt, grease or some other form of crud that is the culprit.
I've also read that if there is a defect in the sensors the left front fails first.

Hope this helps...

My dealer also told me it is usually the LF sensor that goes. Seems odd, but he seems more of these cars in a week than I do in a year or so.

Trouble is when the sensor goes bad you get the light trifecta, not just the low tire light.

my 05 mcs has a reset button on the console by the e-brake lever on the passenger side. I had just rotated my tires when my light came on, I held the button down for 5 seconds with key in position 1 to clear the light.

good guess on the wheel speed sensor (sometimes called the ABS sensor)

it is a common failure, not difficult or expensive to repair . . .

IF you are SURE you are reseting the system correctly. I recall needing to HOLD the button until it flashed . . . but my GEN1 is no longer around to check

from a 2003 owner's manual (online)

1. Ignition key in position 2

2. Press the button long enough for the
yellow indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster to light up for a few seconds

3. Start the engine.

After a few minutes driving time, the Flat
Tire Monitor sets the current inflation pressure
in the tires as the target values to be
monitored.

Flat tire light will NOT go out

I've updated my previous post to reflect Capt_bj's post.

The method he cited from the manual is normaly used when changing tire and or wheel sizes or rotating the tires.
My experence is that sometimes it works for a flat and sometimes it does not.
It should work but in case it doesn't you can try the one I've posted below.
It's for when you've had the light come on for no particular reason at all.

Reseting the FTM:

Sit in drivers seat
Depress FTM button with left hand
Insert key with right hand and turn to position 2
All the diot lights will cycle
The FTM light should go off briefly and then come back on
Release FTM button and start the car
Drive away smiling because the FTM is now reset

And if that doesn't work, as the original poster sugested, put some tape over it!

no

I'd suspect a speed sensor at this time . . .

Would a bad speed sensor throw the ABS light?

The Flat Tire light comes on with the key and does not budge, even for a second. There is no response to the button at all. Anyone know what the voltage/ohms should be between the 3 wires at the button?

I got this idea today--- I will make one tire flat, drive off for a bit and see if I get a different response from the light. It will have to wait till it warms a bit though. Minus 23 is a bit too cold to be playing with a flat tire.

Back to the wheel sensor.. Antilock brakes are working normal...

Keep the ideas commin' gotta get the light out!!!!

Thanks but I have tried both of these methods (many times).

I have reset the light quite a few times with the last set of tires as I had a leak in the left rear. I reset the light every 3 days till I finally got around to repair the tire. I have since put new tires on. P185/65-15 COOPER Response Turing...Like them so far....very good in the Ice and snow.....and we got snow....

Sheier, did you ever solve the problem? I'm having the same issue. I had my control arm bushings changed, and and now I can't get the DSC and Flat Tire lights to shut off.

I've reset the system in the past without much problem at all using the traditional method, but now it simply won't go out. The light is on when I turn the key on, and when I hold the button, nothing changes. My ABS works, and my tire pressures are confirmed to be set within 2psi all around. I've also tried resetting the ECU, which made the car run a bit smoother, but nothing else.

Please advise?

If you are getting both the DSC and the Flat Tire light, you may have a problem with steering angle sensor. After the bushings were replaced, is your steering wheel pointed in a different direction? If so, you will need to get an alignment (so the wheel is oriented correctly) or have the sensor reset (dealer). If the wheel didn't change, then the sensor is probably defective.

Did you ever fix this?

Got the same problem with my 03' mcs. Light started flashing when driving - all tires were fine. Won't reset at all.

I seem to recall when I had a sensor issue the ABS light came on too. I don't want to go replacing stuff that isn't going to fix it...
