Dealer installed 04 Cooper alarm system
Has anyone had a dealer install an 04 alarm. I had one installed and I can't trigger it. I wound the window half way down, reached in and moved the door handle, steering wheel and shook the window. I also shook my Cooper. I cannot get it to sound. Anyone have any suggestions what might be wrong?
When I had my alarm installed by the dealer, they tested it out in front of me and told me how to work it before I left.
I would take it back to the dealer immediately and ask them to fix it.
You can look here to see how to install it.

I may note that the instructions on Gabe's WWW site, I believe, are for the 2002's and 2003's. I just got my 2004 alarm kit (with instructions), and it is slightly different. Just a bit, but slightly. Also, the estimated install time I think is .75 hours, not 3-4! I think on cars on certain spec (running wiring, installing the ultrasconic sensor casing), it would be more.
I have a hardcopy, but can't digitize to PDF. If someone can show me a way, I will gladly do
cheers,
-Matt

My inside motion sensors trigger right away if you just wave your arm into the car with the windows down. No need to touch or jiggle anything! If your alarm isn't triggering simply off of the motion sensors then, yeah, I'd go back to the dealer for a test.
I just got mine from Classic and paid $236.00. But the instructions state that it is only for 09/03 build dates and later only.

>>How is the installation? Easy? Hard?
The installation of the 04 alarm is relatively straight forward, making it an ideal DIY project. There's no wire to run and only 3 components to install that can be done under an hour. After installation, the alarm needs to be activated by the dealer, which typically involves 1/2 hour of labor.

Sugarman, $695 is an outrageous price for 2004 alarm. The part retails for $260 and the labor time is under an hour (0.75 hr to be exact). If my math is correct, your dealer charges $435 for 3/4 hour of labor.

davecsumini -- Does the '04 Alarm Kit come with instructions?
I retrofitted the BMW alarm on my 328i and it was VERY easy. However, the pictures in the online instructions saved me some time in locating connection points. Once installed, the dealer charged me $37 to activate it. I also changed some of my memory options at the same time.
Thanks,

I was quoted $650 for the factory alarm. A bit too much I think.

"A bit" is an understatement!

i'd say buy the mini alarm from parts dept or classic mini, install yourself the parts, and have the dealer input it onto your ceu. $600 is far too much. and the install of the parts is as easy as it gets. just make sure you get the '04 instructions.
my '03 mini's alarm was nearly impossible to set off with just rocking the car by myself. however, leave the window open slightly and walk right by the window and the motion sensor picks it up. with the windows closed shut, it will not p/u outside motion. but it should definitely go off if you wave your hand around inside the car. i'd get your motion sensor checked.
a MA told me that basically the alarm is the audible part of the mini's security system. it is difficult to drive off with already because of its electronic chip key. in addition to the driver's side only keyhole, the door locks are difficult to pop up manually. and i don't think the alarm does anything to disengage the ignition. so yes, i would say that the alarm is basically an audible extension of the mini security system. but a very loud and distinct alarm, i must say, if anything should set off its interior motion or tilt sensor.
