Wife and I were washing the car today (a balmy 62 degrees in NC) and when I lifted the hood to dry underneath I noticed one of the two retaining nuts on the plastic piece under the hood missing. Anybody know what thread size those two nuts are? I don't think its been a problem because the stud is holding it in place and the pressure on the foam is keeping it from rattling, but I guess MINI put two there for a reason, so I should have two of them.

I don't know about the thread size, but from memory, they need an 8mm socket.
If you want to match them exactly, there are 2 more identical nuts (that hold the scoop on the car) in the middle 2 of the 4 rectangular openings underneath the very front of the bonnet. If you do remove one for matching, I'd recommend not driving the MINI to pick up the extra nuts. Don't wanna lose the scoop!

A little dab of silicone on the nuts after you snug them up, will forever cure this ill. If you wet your finger with saliva, you will be able to shape the silicone nicely and it will not stick to your finger.

Don't lick your finger AFTER shaping the silicone. Tastes really bad and might seal up your tastebuds.

be careful if you plan to ever take the "siliconed' nuts off - the blind studs are held in a top hat section of the plastic hood and are prone to breakage

Whilst I was removing mine (which was cross threaded from factory) the section broke and I had to crack the surrounding area of the hood scoop to get it out. I have not seen it but the dealers do have a special doggle to hold the stud section which I am sure wold prevent this

At least this polarized my decision on whether I liked my white scoop - coz i could not go back!!!! )

Thank you jamesgang for bringing this up. PKT RKT came out of hibernation today and that is the first thing I di, snug them babies up and dabbed 'em with silicone. Again, MANY thanks!!
