Horn won't work - '05 MCS Conv
I have never posted to a forum in my life - I'm now 29 yrs +. I was just quoted $160 diagnostic charge to find out why my horn won't work. I'm currently failing the Virginia VA State Inspection because of it?!?
I'll be trying to see if it's simply a blown fuse, but not sure which one to replase. I am also wondering if there was any other causes I would need to be wary about...
I'm a newbie to working on my MINI, but I have no other choice due to finances.
Your help is appreciated,
Dr. D

Did it just stop working?
I would check the fuse out first -- not likely both trumpets would fail at the same time. there's a guide/diagram on the inside of the cover for the fuses that will direct you to the right one to check -- as well as there should be a spare in there as well.

horn fuse is #28
panel is behind the little door in the kick panel on the driver side. On the panel you'll find 3 col's of fuses and they number top to bottom, left to right. Top of middle col is 19 ... count down. It is a 15 amp.
If the fuse is good it is possible one horn failed a while back and now the second has failed. Unfortunately I've heard of a few having horn problems altho I've not myself. There are two horns and they live behind the lower front bumper, one to a side. Getting to them requires removing the bumper cover or going in thru the wheel well. You might get to 'em from underneath but you'd at least need to be on jack stands IMO.
You could pull the wire on one horn and use a test meter / light to verify that there is juice going to the horn when the button is pressed. If yes, then you need a new horn. Some choose to just mount a new one someplace accessible and run a wire from the old connector up to a new horn. If fuse is good and no juice when the horn is pressed it sounds like a bad switch (ugh) or the horn relay which lives in that same fuse panel; another easy fix.
Where in VA. I can point you to a MINI group in DC area, or Hampton Roads . . .
If ya need a new horn, why be shy?

They are on my 79, they sit in the left wheel well, in the right side is a pair of Hella Electric's for a simple loud blast. I have a toggle near the steering wheel so I can select normal or musical.
I fabricated the bracket, and if I had wheels larger than 10", or the inner fenders I don't think they would have fit!
