Broken Wheel Lug
Broken Wheel Lug
One of the wheel lug bolts snapped taking off the summer wheels.
I wasn't doing anything stupid like using a breaker either. I was using a spinner this time but I usually use the tire iron that came with the car
Well I'm taking it in tomorrow to get the remainder of the bolt extracted. I mainly just wanted to whine a little.

Very rare to happen unless it's cross threaded, and that's hard to do...
Once the wheel is off you should be able to grab the remains with a pair of channel locks or vice grips and spin it right out - unless it's cross threaded of course....if the threads are ruined you probably should buy a new hub - taking a chance on a wheel coming off is not worth it. If the threads are OK take a good hard look at the other bolts and see if their threads are damaged.
Another thing that can cause this is the wheel being loose and wearing on the shaft of the bolt - if it was the others will show damage too - if so, replace all of them!

I don't think it is that rare. I had 2 break off on me. Before they go, they will start to squeal as you loosen or tighten them. I've been told that is a sign of threads stretching. Over time it gets so bad that they break.
Just this year I had my car in for service for a wheel speed sensor on the drivers front. When they put on the wheel, they either didn't torque it and just put it on as tight as possible, or they torqued it to the higher torque spec that started in mid 2006 with the larger stud (mine is an earlier 2006 model). When I went to rotate the tires I could hardly get that wheel off and it was apparant the lugs had been damaged due to over tightening. They end up giving my 5 bolts for free ... (I put them on to make sure they were torqued correctly).
