Your car should be flagged for a recall, but since you just acquired it, you won't receive the recall notice. Check here: http://www.miniusa.com/content/miniu...rt/recall.html

It won't matter whether or not it's working at the time. This is an official NHTSA safety recall based on VIN and the dealer is obliged to perform the service.

The extended warranty has been replaced by an official safety recall. No limit on mileage or age.

Wow, was not aware that it became an official recall until today. That's great to hear.

Did you check to see if the power steering fan is working?

Pump may have overheated from sitting in traffic.

Hi guys,

So, I recently bought a used Mini Cooper S 2006 in Canada, with 85 000 km on the clock.
Everything was perfectly fine, until the PS pump started making the famous noise we all dislike.
That exact noise (not my mini)
So, the PS seems to be working fine, can't really feel a difference with before, but still, that noise sucks.

So, I also know that you guys with a 02 to 05 MCS have a recall for the PS Pump, so I called Mini, thinking that maybe I still had an 05 pump.
The guy told me that my car didn't have any recall for the PS pump, but I have a recall for the passenger seat. So, rendez-vous is taken next week to replace it.
I'll try and ask the guy to have a look at the pump and tell me what's wrong with it. Hum, he'll probably tell me to replace it for 600 CAD, but we'll see.

Thank you guys,

Cheers,

Stan

I wondered about that too. I won't be able to check it out until this weekend. Traffic wasn't as bad today (and it's about 10 degrees cooler) and the power steering worked the entire time.

I heard back from MINI; they directed me to a website to enter the last 7 of my VIN. (The spelling errors are theirs, not mine.) According to that site, my car (Sept 2004 build) is covered under the recall:

15V-660

POWER STEERING SYSTEM

  • Reported | OCT 12, 2015
  • Status | Recall incomplete. Remedy not yet available.
Recall Description

The electro-hydraulic power steering system may experience temporary or permanent loss of assistance due to manufacturing and field exposure issues.

Safety Risk

In the event of a temporary or a permanent loss of power steering assistance, manual steering capability would be retained, however greater steering effort would be required. This may increase the potential for loss of vehicle control.

Repair Description

Your MINI dealer will inspect the power steering system components, i.e. pump, fan, and/or wiring, and the necessary and appropriate components will be replaced at no charge. An extended warranty is also available on affected MINIs.

Additonal information is not available.

I was at MINI of Kennesaw, GA and inquired about the status of the power steering pump recall. Was told by the service tech that unless mine was making a "god awful" noise or had failed outright they would not do anything about it. Is that accurate??? 2003 MCS.

I went to Global MINI and told them it was failing intermittently. They looked up my VIN and determined my car was newer than 13 years old and had less than 150k miles on it. Then they told me the car was covered under recall and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow. I will have to let you know after they're finished.

The mileage and age is not supposed to matter with a safety recall. Those numbers refer to the old pump warranty not the new recall.

I'm just repeating what the service adviser said to me.

I'm just repeating what I read on this forum lol.

It makes sense though, safety recall should be done regardless if the pump is making noise or not. I wonder if the recall is active yet

As I understand it, the recall became effective December 1st. I spoke to the service adviser on December 2nd. Hopefully I will know more tomorrow.

Sitting in the waiting room at Global MINI now. The service adviser told me they will be replacing the pump and the fan, plus checking out the rest of the system. They said I'll be ready to go in a couple of hours, so I'm crossing my fingers for a good outcome.

Don't leave us hangin' bro! How did it turn out for you at Global? Love to chat more detailed about it offline if there is a way we can do that.

Sorry, I've had a really busy work week since then.

For the recall, they replaced the pump, fan and fluid. I was the first car in the service lane at 7:00am. It took about 2.5 hours from the time I handed over the key until I was pulling off the parking lot. Everything is working very smoothly (as it should) now.

They also checked over my car and found a list of items they felt needed attention. Of the items that I didn't know about, they say the low speed fan isn't working, the valve cover gasket is leaking, the crank position sensor o-ring is leaking and the oil pan gasket is leaking. I have not seen any evidence of oil leaks, so I will be poking around the engine compartment this weekend to see what I find.

Feel free to send me a private message if you want to discuss anything offline.

Thanks for the scoop. I will shoot you a note in a bit. Just replaced my valve cover gasket this past weekend. Not that bad of a job and certainly not worth the $700 odd the dealer wants to charge you to replace a $10 gasket.

Does anyone know if they have further updated any of the parts? I have a 2004 and my pump died a few years back. I bit the bullet and had it done at the dealer which was good because when they came out with the warranty extension, they were able to refund what I paid.

But, as this was still a few years ago and they said they did not have a revised part number then, I just figured I'd check as I just got the letter yesterday.

I just got a notice in the mail yesterday about Recall Campaign No. 15V-660: Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS) System. The notice said that certain 2002-2005 MINI Cooper and Cooper S models, and 2005 convertible models are affected.

The note said they are not ready to conduct the recall right now, but I would be notified by letter when they are ready, and I should make an appointment with an authorized MINI dealer to have the recall performed on my vehicle at that time.

My car is a 2003 R50 with 97,000 miles, and it does exhibit one of the symptoms: an increase in steering effort at low vehicle speeds.

It will be nice to get that fixed.

But updated when? I've seen some reports it was only updated in like 2005 so mine would have been that one as it was done maybe 2010.

Are they reimbursing if you already had your pump replaced? I was originally told I wasn't covered because my build date was August 05 and they were only covering till June.

Got "the letter" earlier this month advising me that my 2003 was one of the 86,000 "affected" vehicles and that a recall was forth coming. Stopped by MINI of Kennesaw GA and was told that this was just a letter telling us that a recall was coming and that MINI was likely working through the final bits and bobs prior to a recall. Service tech said I should receive another from MINI sometime in the future but didn't know if it was in 3 weeks or 3 months.

They would reimburse if you are covered, but unfortunately the recall only covers September 2001 to February 2005 build date.
