Oil Leak

Hey everyone,

I've been trying to track down an oil leak. I've already replaced a leaky valve cover gasket and had the oil pan gasket replaced. Still have a leak. I got the car on ramps today, wiped it all down underneath and then let the car run for a few minutes. I'm attaching a pic where I'm seeing the oil. Does it seem to indicate the oil pan gasket is still leaking?

Hopefully the pic has enough features people can tell where this is!

Thanx for any insight!

If it's coming from the inside (between the surfaces of the oil pan and transmission), the only way to differentiate is to put dye in the motor oil. Wipe down with brake cleaner and wait for the leak to reappear.

dyed oil = motor oil (leaky pan or rear seal)
non-dyed oil = transmission fluid (seal)

You could do an oil change...with Royal Purple Oil....will do the same thing too......since it is Purple!!
Like said, clean the motor very well, and let it sit, running, and try to track it down....driving the car, or even having the fan run will move the oil around, and make it harder to find the leak!!

Check the crank sensor on the front of the block. It has an O-ring seal that could be leaking. It was on mine!

Hope This Helps...

Just remembered, on Motoringfile, they listed the most common leaks on the Gen 1 MINI's a while back...it might be a good place to look!!
Some of the info was in the buyers guide...
http://www.motoringfile.com/mini-r50r53-buyers-guide/

Like all R50/R53 MINIs, the cars still had several oil leak issues at this point. The single largest issue we’ve seen are leaks around the crank seal/gasket. The seal dries up and allow oil to be pumped out as it’s near the crank damper. It’s a relatively easy fix (once you get the entire front of the engine apart) but if it’s not dealt with it can cause oil starvation and serious engine issues. Another place to look for oil leaks is at the crank sensor. The o-ring around it shrinks and allows oil to pass often as early as 30,000 miles. However the reason this is such an issue is that it will leak down the front of the block and simply blow off when driving never show up on a drive-way while parked. Again the fix entails pulling the front off the car and replacing a relatively cheap part.
