Gas Gauge Shows Empty - Tank is Full

Hey folks - I'm hoping someone out there can give me some help! Yesterday when leaving work, my gas gauge showed empty even though I knew I had a full tank of gas! Naturally my first thought was some bozo siphoned the gas out of my car. So I stopped and got gas and it only took 1 gallon. Is there a fuse or something in the car that may have blown and now shows my gas tank empty? Or is this a take it to the dealer and get them to fix it? I've got a 2003. I appreciate any feedback!

I think it's a common glitch. It happens to me every couple of tanks now, but it eventually works again. I have never gone a full tank without it working, but just in case I keep tabs on the mileage per tank.

Here's an older thread about it.

This happens occassionally in the 1st generation MINIs. My 2002 does this occassionally. Remove the gas cap and put it back. If this doesn't work it may return to normal in a couple of starts. See also:

It's the ghost of Lucas: It happens occasionally on my '05; "the dealer couldn't duplicate it." Stopping and switching it off and then back on seemed to fix it a couple of times, but now I just let it self correct over a day or two. I haven't tried removing the gas cap and putting it back on; I'll try that next time.
