Freeing a stuck axle?

Anyone have any tips on freeing an axle that's seized in the hub?

It is most likely not stuck. It has a snap ring that holds it in and sometimes it takes a lot to pull it out. Hose clamp on the axle and pry bar.

I think he means the splines on the wheel bearing hibs and not at the gearbox...
Take the old nut and thread it on a few threads. BE VERY CAREFUL and tap it to see if it becomes free.
If that doesnt work you may need an air hammer with a Punch attachment and you can hit it in the center divet.

^Yes , it's stuck at the hub, not the gearbox. I know better than to start jobs without a service manual, but had to try to get this done. Is there a snap ring on the hub side? I tried with an air hammer and a small sledge hammer with a block of wood and it won't budge. It should just pull out, correct?

Hit it with a rubber mallet. If that doesn't work take a small piece of wood have some on hold it against the end of the axle and hit it a few times with a sledge hammer.

Just seen your last reply. can you heat it up a little bit with a torch?

I got a hub puller and I'm going to try that tonight with a little heat. I'm not real big on using heat because of the damage I could do, but I may end up tearing things up anyway

There is no snap ring on the hub side... only the axle nut. Try some penetrating oil and letting it soak. Again be very careful not to damage the splines or threads on the axle. I have always found an air hammer works best even if it takes a lot of vibration to free it up. Those hubs are not very heavy duty... a propane torch should give you enough heat.
