'03 R50 - "whirring" noise under hood after car is shut off - HELP!

'03 R50 - "whirring" noise under hood after car is shut off - HELP!
Walked out to my Cooper this afternoon to find that the battery had died 
. Long story short, called AAA - battery jumped. Upon driving home, noticed faint "whirring" noise then when I pulled into my garage and shut the car off - noise continued, until I disconnected the battery.
The noise sounds as if I'm turning the wheels/low speed manuver. I'm not sure if it could be PS fan or the unit itself. I've got 122.5k on the clock and I've never any issues related to PS, have never noticed any PS failure prior to this - completely baffled as to what the cause could be.
Any help/tips are GREATLY appreciated!!!
