Coolant temperature pegged-out at max

With a cold engine, as soon as I turn the key, the gauge shoots to max, but the warning light doesn't come on.

This happened right after the battery died on a day the outside temperature hit 100F. The car reluctantly started, but the Climate controls wouldn't work and none of the tachometer instruments would either (all K-bus controlled). When I replaced the battery with a new one, everything came back, except the temperature gauge.

I'm thinking: bad tachometer pod. Where can I find a used one?

Thank you for your quick reply,

I need the tachometer (the one with the temperature gauge in it), do you have one of those?

Sounds like you have the dual pods on the column....have not seen any of those up for grabs but will keep an eye out for one

Here is a place who may have that part. They are in Waterbury Ct.

You could also check with Way at www.Waymotorworks.com He often has used MINI's being parted out there too.

There is a single pod (tachometer) on the steering column, flanked by a oil-pressure gauge (on left) and a boast gauge. speedo is in the center dash.

Here is a picture of the very kit I bought, the tach in the middle (which I need) is not for sale.

I'm mistaken, you are correct, the temperature gauge is in the centrally mounted speedometer.

I'm not familiar enough with this car, I'm fixing it for someone else.

Looks like Toms has the part, but $300? I better make sure this is the broken part.
