Boot Trouble

Hi I am new here and hoping to find advise or stories of common experiences.

My Boot lid ( Trunk ) was out of allignment. I checked the hindge and found one had torn the body where it mounted. The whole stud and nut pulled right thru and left a nut size tear in the mounting point.

Has anyone had this happen? Is there a fix besides taking it to a body shop and getting it welded? Do these hindges stretch out over time?

It is the upper hindge which looks like the Picture below.

The stud on the hindge mounts through a hole and then the nut goe on under the roof panel. The nut pulled right through the body however.

I can see there being a lot of stress placed on these hindges because of the location of the rams. It is a poor design and I may be one of the first few people to experience it because of my cars year.

I have heard of the boot hinge pins seizing & after time the hinge breaks in half. I have never heard of one ripping out out of the body shell by the bolt. I think you may be headed to the body-shop for a fix.

You could try using a couple fender washers on each side of the roof where the bolt pulled through. My guess is that will not be strong enough for a lasting fix, but it's worth a try.

It is a 2002 mini. I did end up trying a washer in behind it. Getting in was indeed akward and I lost one washer down the frame. Whoopie !!!

The metal has lost its strenth, because of fatigue. I think I will end up doing a little MIG work. It is an ugly situation, I will try to post some pictures soon.

I finally took the boot lid off and took out the hinges. One wasn't moving at the pin and was actually bending back and forth.

So I guess the solution is to make sure that you always oil your hinges or to ask mini to stop welding them so tight on the pin.
