Radiator System Smashed to Bits by Phantom Object?!?
Radiator System Smashed to Bits by Phantom Object?!?
We've owned a 2010 Mini Hardtop 6spd manual for about 3 months and it overheated yesterday. It was towed 3 hours to the closest dealer. Today they told us the radiator and radiator hose had been damaged and they will not cover the repairs to the car under warranty. We have never hit anything, nor heard a rock or object hit the car. We give our Mini the white glove treatment and CAN'T BELIEVE an object has torn through the front of the car without our knowledge. The repairs are $1560.00 on our brand new car. What is the deal here?
Many owners have not been able to believe that their car encountered anything in the first weeks of ownership and therefore thought MINI should replace their windshield.
Randomness says the chance to have damage day one is the same as day 10 ... year 10.
Randomness might make you a looser early.....
Sorry but I have little to offer beyond what's your Comp' deductable.....
No rad' explosions - or glass failures - here
Not a slam .... a reality check.

Strange things happen, I almost blew my Jeep's engine last week because apparently a rock or something pierced the oil filter and I was loosing oil badly. Good thing I noticed the leak and oil smell because I was down 2 quarts with no idiot light, more than likely the light would have come on when it would have been too late. Just saying road debris is everywhere and anything could have happened without you knowing...
As everyone else has said, random stuff happens. New Mustang GT, huge metal spike (like used on railroad ties) through the tread of the tire and out the sidewall next to the rim. In addition to the new tire, it also completely destroyed the strut before I realized what was happening and was able to get pulled over.
A rock through a radiator would not make a big sound, though I do not know the extent of the damage you experienced.

Weird things happen!
A couple hit a coyote and it gets trapped in front of the radiator.

Capt bj may be right. Your insurer should cover the damages (minus your deductable). If the insurer thinks its a defect let them fight with MINI.
Its always a good idea to ask for your damaged parts back from the shop. In cases like these the insurer may want them to verify the claim.
If you did file a claim I'd be curious to know how it turned out.
