Air conditioner hissing

Air conditioner hissing
I have an '06 Cooper. The compressor was replaced at 10k under warranty. I have 85k on it now. A few miles back the air conditioner started making a hissing/squeaking type of noise only when the A/C button/light is engaged. Needless to say the A/C does not work. It sounds like it is coming from inside tha dash.
Has anyone had a noise like this only when the AC is on? What could it possibly be?
2 problems here. It's 105 degrees and I am short on change to fix this for the rest of the summer. I have a clutch, brakes, and tires to deal with this month so if it is a $1500 problem I'm going to have to go hot this summer if I want to continue with this car.

Same issue here. I describe as a 'wheeze'.
When I first heard it (along with no cold air) I refilled the system with R134a and it worked for a while. But only a while. Now it has plenty of fluid, but little or no cold air. Fortunately I'm on the cool coast.
Check your radiator fan low speed - it should come on when the AC is on.
Also check that the AC compressor is spinning when the AC button is pushed.
I've just ordered a new fan assembly, and am hoping that it may help revive the AC. Alternatively, I'm looking at a new compressor and/or dryer.
