08 mini cooper ac compressor wont come on.

I have rebuilt a 08 mini cooper base model h, the ac system has a full charge, when you turn the air on (the littel snow flake appears) but the ac compressor doesnt run. When you check for power at the compressor the car isnt calling for the ac to come on.(no voltage) when you apply 12 v to the ac wires at the compressor it runs and blows very cold air!

I would maybe assume the ac relay? But i cannot find it?
I lloked under the hood in that fuse box and on the passenger side by the kick panel fuse box but nothing there either......

Please help

ps the radiator fans come on and work perfectly........

the dealer is 90 miles away and have you ever paid there rates?

why would anyone who can do anything pay anyone else to do it for them?

i always thought these sites were places to learn so you can do things for your self and NOT take it dealers.

i will figure it out in my spare time which costs me nothing....

thanks anyway for your help

If your '08 has less than 50K miles on it, you are still under warranty and the repair won't cost you a dime. Warranty is 4 years/50K miles.

I thought the "h" in your post was a typo! What exactly is an "h"?

mini cooper h
mini cooper s
mini cooper convertible
mini cooper clubman

these are the 4 different mini's in the 2008 year models....
when you order parts you must specify which one you have.

h....i assume is for hatchback
s....someone said if it has the hood scoop.

mine is considered the base model H

all 4 are different when you order parts!

I'm not sure about the 2nd gen but on my 03 the relay is next to the battery box. I'm pretty sure they've probably moved it but i hope this helps.

Do you have an automatic AC unit or the manual unit? On my automatic AC you have to press the snowflake button and have it's light on for the AC to work. You might check to see if you have a snowflake button and trying pushing it. Just a thought....

I just looked in the battery box on my 09 and I see nothing. Based on the noises, I'd guess that it is down in the passenger side footwell perhaps near the fuse block. I don't see anything under the hood.

Are you sure that everything is tight under the instrument panel? Mine had something loose when I picked it up and they had a guy from service push a connector back in place. He took the glove compartment out to do it.

Another place to look is in Realoem.com. Its a parts listing, but from their diagrams, you may be able to figure out where the part is located. I use them all the time to look at parts orientation.

Good luck, and please understand that the guys here were trying to be helpful when they told you to check a dealer. Most 08s are still undedr the factory warranty and I'm sure they thought you may be unaware that the dealer would help.

Good luck.

Go to component signal, under K_relays, it is relay K19 in the fuse box.

You may need to refer to this thread to get the SVG plugin installed. This site will give you most of the wiring and troubleshooting you will need.

Also, you may want to go to eBay and find a set of DVDs that contain this information as well. Similar to the following:

Any one ever get to the bottom of this issue ? I have an 09 and a 14 r56 and both are doing the same thing !!! I am not getting any power at the compressors but if I put power to them ( there is a two wire plug going to compressor , one is power wire other is ground ) then the Ac clutch spins fine . System will take a couple ounces of freon and then it builds up to much pressure to take anymore . Changed out pressure switch to make sure it wasn't the culprit but it didn't change .
Was told the Ac relay on r56 is built into the jbe so not really an option to swap !

Any help is greatly appreciated !!!

Same problem here. The weird part is, the a/c clutch will engage when decelerating in low gears, and occasionally when moving in reverse.

I thought the problem was tied to the cooling system, as I recently had a thermostat housing failure. But even after a successful repair, I still have the A/C issue. I'm kind of running out of ideas. The last thing I can think to try is to change the oil - Even though I just did it in late March. Seems odd, but apparently it was common for the a/c on R53 models to stop working when the oil became too dirty.

Yes try oiling the system then pull a good vacuum before charging with freon - that's what fixed mine last week .
