05 air conditioner problem
05 air conditioner problem
Hi have a few questions about the air in my mini. My 05 Cooper has the auto air and is not getting cold. I have put my a/c gauges on and I belive that the sytem is not low. I have also noticed that my compressor clutch does not come on at all. Also I noticed that my fan does not come on when I turn A/C on. I checked for power at plug going to the fan and it looks like it is not calling for the fan to come on. Car was not running long so I did not have power at all coming from plug but I know fan will come on when car gets up to temp. I took a jumper wire and put it on the plug going to the fan and it will run the high side of the fan but not the low side. I dont think the fan is stoping the clutch from pulling in but I am not sure about how mini work. I do most of my own work on my cars so I know my way around under a hood but just wanted to see if any one could point me in the right direction. Do you think maybe the auto a/c in car is not working right? Thanks to all Sam I am.
Since you do not hear the clutch come on....it could be a bad clutch....which is only sold as a combo unit (compressor+clutch), but one or two folks have found local guys that will swap out a clutch if they do in-house rebuilds of stuff.....
It is also possible the pressures are too low...maybe a leak has developed, or it needs to be recharged...do you know what the pressures are? Have you check to see if it needs gas?
Short of making sure the pressure switch on the side of the compressor is plugged in....and the system is charged...not sure how much more a DIY'r can do without opening up the system than you have already done.

There is a pressure switch on compressor I found one under the batterie box but I could not check or jump as the conecters were very tiny and I did not want to damage them. I will take the power plug off the compressor and test to see if it is getting voltage. As far as needing to be charged I do not think that is the case. Thanks Sam I am.
Why don't you think it needs to be charged....unfortunately the MINI sits close to the ground...and the condenser is in a spot it gets damaged easily...and the AC compressor have worn out on many mini's in the range of 70,000 to 100,000 miles.....(with the heat/AC set to auto, the AC runs much more than people realize to de-humidify the car)
Unless it has recently been charged...even then it could have a leak, an 05 is likely low in pressure...and the pressure. Many people have a simple gauge around from a refil kit ( you might be able to borrow one from a friend).... at least you will know the system is full enough to operate)....it will give you an idea if this is something you need to look at!
Assume nothing when fixing something....the cooling system requires a full and proper charge to operate....and asking it to run with out gas, is like asking a car to run on an empty tank.
Then you have a clutch/compressor....and an expansion valve..., and the electrical components. Things are much more likely to fail mechanically than electricity in the AC....having a proper charge is important...too much...nothing works....too little....nothing works.

I have a set gauges and did put them on the car to check the pressure it seam to be fine but with out the compressor running its hard to get a good reading so i tryed adding free on but the compressor never came on. I am going to try and check for power at the compessor. What about the low speed of the fan not working does the power go thru the compressor first then to the fan? Rember I had no power at the plug going to the fan so I was thinking maybe something wrong with the switch in side the car. I know hi side of the fan works but with the air on it shoud turn the low speed of the fan on almost immedietely right?
First and foremost you need to put 12 volts to the clutch and read both pressures (assuming it will engage and isn't burned out) and look at the pressures to determine if it's a compressor issue. If the clutch engages and the ac blows cold then your looking at a pressure switch, relay or bad control. Those parts are a hell of lot less trouble to change out than a compressor swap.
Way stocks a tons of stuff not on the website...just call him!!
