Is replacing an axle half shaft and wishbone a DIY project?
Hello All, my R53 was slammed sideways into a curb. The wishbone (control arm) was bent and the half shaft of the axle was pulled in half exposing the middle knuckle bearing joint. Is this a fix that I can do with just basic auto repair knowledge(brakes, oil and filters, etc..)? Does the Bentley manual cover this procedure?

Yes, though it is a little more than a brake job - a small-size ball joint splitter will come in handy, as well as 10, 13, 16, 17, and 22mm wrenches and sockets, and a torque wrench, and a certain degree of patience. The Haynes Guide has good instructions, so I would presume the Bentley does also.

Good luck

I believe you'd have to drop the subframe, but the experts could tell you better. Not sure how else you'd get the control arm out of the stock bushing. They're in there really tight. I just dropped the subframe for the first time last week, and it was pretty easy to get off the car. Getting it back on was a little harder, but nothing that I couldn't easily do now that I know how. I was working alone too, only with jackstands. You should look into replacing your control arm bushings and ball joints at this time, if your car is older.
