It probably needs to be lubricated. You can use white lithium grease on the tracks and it should solve the problem.

Yup, what he said ^

This happened to me about three weeks ago. Was working normally and then all of a sudden it was having a horribly hard time closing and would revert back to opening mode. I had to push it to close it all the way. I used some synthetic waterproof grease and lubed the rails closest to the sides of the sunroof with some pipe cleaners (as well as all the other tracks I could see that would have any friction). Works great now!

Sunroof Issue

I have a 2010 mini clubman and I have the sunroof problem. I also have a problem with the volume **** on my radio and I have the upgraded sound system. What I have found is that the heat causes the problem

The part that makes me frustrated is I have brought my mini back to the dealer 3x and they give me some bull story about how they can't do anything about it. That they have to write to corporate and get their approval. But like I said 3x and still they haven't done anything. This is the dealer in Albuquerque NM.

It smells a small amount for a couple of weeks, but I prefer using bearing grease on my sunroof tracks. Take some time to study all the edges involved. You want to make sure you get to the parts under the cloth-like seals along the back tracks along the rear half of the roof. To help with applying the grease, I used a burnt incense stick (they make great paint stirrers if you paint miniature figures). A toothpick or similar item would work well, too.
