Timing chain rattle cured or not?

I'll highlight this because apparently some people can't read...

This post is only for those that have/had the engine rattle from the timing chain and took the car to be repaired.

I really don't want to hear stories of how you took it in and they couldn't duplicate it or you've had it, blah, blah, blah.

Two simple questions.

For those that have had the timing chain rattle and had it repaired...

1) Did it cure the problem?

2) how many miles on the car since you had it repaired?

Thanks,

Mark

I'm in the UK.

Had mine fixed in May 2009, car had only covered about 1k miles.

Now done 11k miles, never heard it since despite some cold (< -5C) temperatures over here in Bonnie Scotland.

I think the issue is no more if dealers are doing their job correctly.

3 repairs: January 2009 (tensioner piston replaced, still rattled), May 2009 (full monty repair, chain rattle returned 3500 miles later), and January 2010 (latest revised tensioner piston installed, almost new chain well within stretch deflection limits). So far so good ...

According to the PDX MINI dealer, BMW revised the tensioner piston twice in 2009. The latest tensioner is 11-31-7-597-895.

Tensioner replaced on February 5th, 2010. I mentioned it once, they asked no questions and did the replacement. Haven't heard that terrible sound since.

I had my chain tensioner replaced in March 2009 when my car had ~13K miles on it. This December (~17.5K miles), the noise came back and was more frequent and louder than ever before. Car is back at the dealer as I type.

Had my new to me 2007 MCS in April 2009 for the fix. Solved the problem completely until Nov when the noise occured again - but very infrequent. Since it is at the dealer for a few weeks for a new cylinder head I am getting the latest fix applied at the same time.

My 07 S went in on a truck over two weeks ago and I got it back today. 150 miles trip home and nary a clatter. A little over 23k when it went in. They replaced the cam gear, tensioner, cam chain, guides, etc. They removed the head for inspection as the chain had apparently slipped. Over $2,200 all together, I'm sure glad it was under warranty. Looking at the pictures I'm wondering, is this a Mellow yellow problem?

My 07 MCS had the tensioner changed at approx. 15k. Since then, no problems, although to be fair freezing weather is rare here in Central Cal.
So far, so good.

Replaced last Fri. at 32,000 (only had it happen like 4 times ever) because of the "cold" during the snow storms in VA. Hasn't come back nor has it been "cold" since. But here's hoping right?

Tagged. I just had the full replacement last week, so I'll check in after I put some miles in.

This is a long shot, but has anyone here made a sound recording of the timing chain rattle? I just today noticed a ticking sound on my wife's 89k-mile 03 MCS that I don't remember hearing before. She says that it sounds normal to her, but it doesn't to me. The caveat is that I have rarely driven this car since I traded cars with her. I checked the oil, and it was low, but not much (though it uses up noticeably more oil than my 130k E30 318is). The last oil change was August 09, or maybe 4000 miles ago. I've been changing it once in early spring and in the fall, and we average less than 10k per year.
Ours sounds rather a lot like the failed tensioner in my 318is.
I will be doing the repair myself, so if anyone has done it and has any pointers that don't involve taking it to a stealer, I'd be grateful to hear them. It was a 10-minute job on the E30's longitudinal engine.

Thanks,

Mark
