check engine light

In the last 2 months the check engine light comes on for a few days an then clears itself. I first thought, loose gas cap. . . Seems tight. I took it in to the dealer today since the brake sensor came on today. They said it needed a software update and that would cost me $265.00 . They said the software would make the check engine function less sensitive. Does this sound right or were they trying to re-coupe the cost of the brake job which was under warantee?

A less sensitive CEL for $265 Typical stealership BS. Head on over to Autozone and ask them to plug their code reader up(free service) get the code and let us know the results.

Question, Does the CEL have to be on when you do the scan or does it store the fault after it goes out?

That stealer did a crappy brake job too. Didn't even turn the rotors.

It *may* be stored if there is no CEL, if the CEL is on then it *will* be stored.

I'd complain to mini USA about your brakes....the rotors according to mini cannot be turned, and should have been replaced. Also, since it is under warrenty (would not be free under a matainance contract most likely), the software update is free. Period. I'd find a new dealer and complain about their tatictics.

My engine light came on tonight and I went by AutoZone and they wouldn't scan for it. They told me there was a new California law that prohibited it. Anyone heard of it?

I might run out to Minicorsa tomorrow if I can, just concerned about driving on something serious.

Update:

I got my Code Scanner: (Rev2 for Iphone)

Yay!! P2096

Going to clear it and see what happens next. I got this RIGHT after I filled up with gas. (Checked the cap already. Drove it for 4 days now with 2+ starts every day)

Had the same code from Autozone. The dealer changed O2 sensor. No further issues.
