I used the Craftsman set, and it worked like a charm. I just had to pound the removal nut (or whatever you call the tool) onto the stripped bolt head with a hammer. Not major heavy duty hammering, just some good love taps. Those things are designed to bite deep into the head of the bolt and it came right off.

Sorry for raising this corpse of a thread... but I have the same problem. Oil pan drain threads are stripped. I am looking to order a futomo and a timesert kit. Damn, $104 for the kit! Does anyone have one for sale or rent?

The pan is stripped. My current plan is to order the Timesert 1415 kit, along with the tap guide and the tap socket set from Timeset so I can accurately tap the new hole. Then I plan to install a 28mm full thread Timesert insert and install Futomo F-106 valve.

That whole setup runs up to about $170. I was just hoping to save some scratch. If I have to buy I am hoping I can sell the tools after...

most major autopart chains have tool loan programs ... you just need to leave a deposit and return the tool undamaged. I dunno about what you need specifically but it is worth the asking.....

Yeah... no dice with the rental places. I am talking to some mechanic friends to see if they randomly have one.

I had mine get rounded off so I also used Erwin extractors as some others used.

I discovered it worked best to find the closest size to the bolt, smash it onto the drain bolt with a hammer, and then get on it with either an impact or a breaker bar.

I replaced my drain bolt with a fumoto drain valve. if your threads are messed up, you can look for a tap and die kit.

The $11.00 solution!!! My 02 MCS pan stripped out 3 years ago. I couldn't find a Helicoil insert locally so NAPA sold me a self tapping over sized plug that has a small removable plug in the center. I screwed it into the aluminum pan, and poured the old oil down through the engine to flush out any metal filings. Filled with new oil and it worked like a champ.

Irwin Extractor keeps man from going insane...

It was time to change the oil on my new to me 05 MCS and I found that the previous owner had rounded the bolt head of the drain plug bolt...I tried every trick I knew to get the bolt off: vice grips, pipe wrench, hole through the bolt head with grade 8 cap screw...nothing worked.

I gave up and found this thread!

I bought a set of the Irwin extractors at Auto Zone...best $30 I have spent in a long time.

I pounded the 1/2 deep socket extractor onto the bolt head with a 4 pound sledge hammer. Connected up my 1/2 drive impact gun and let loose on the trigger. After about 15 seconds the bolt came loose.

A 3 hr oil change...I will never make it at jiffy lube.
