Broken Vanity Mirror

In the 3 months we have owned our MINI, both vanity (visor) mirrors have broken. When closing the mirror, one or both plastic hinge pins break and the cover drops off. In neither case was the cover forced or over-extended. Per our dealer, replacement will be covered under warranty, but I was just curious if this is a common problem or are we just unlucky?

My driver's side light stopped working. They replaced the visor under warranty (they came to my office to do it!).

Cover on the passenger side broke the very first time it was used. Dealer replaced, no questions asked. I'm still being extra careful, though, even though usage is minimal.

I'm not even sure that I've opened the driver's side mirror yet. I usually glance in the rearview mirror. My sisters use the passenger side one whenever they're in my car so I know that it's fine. I guess that I should check it from time to time...

Mine broke too. First time opening it. Passenger side. Anthracite color (black) had to be ordered from Antarctica.... or so it seemed. Took forever to get.

It's easy to over extend the little mirror door and break the little tabs on the side...

I must have JINX'd myself...the Passenger Visor Mirror Cover broke while cleaning the mirror. The Dealer replaced it under Warranty!! Said it shouldn't have broke.

Drivers side completely fell off while driving, then after I snapped it back in the light would not work. Based on the number of posters who had theirs replaced and the fact that the dealer that maintains my car had them in stock, I think it is unfortunately a common issue.

We finally had some sun today, and the visors are pretty much useless, because they are too small and due to the angle of the windshield. I guess it's time to bust out the shades.

If you want/need replacements www.realoem.com has them, that's what I was looking at thinking that the Dealer would not replace them under warranty.

Ugh, the passenger side broke. No shocker there, as I already mentioned above, my sisters are the only ones that use the vanity mirrors. I've probably used mine all of 2-3 times and those were for interviews. I guess it's time to visit the dealership.

Both covers broken on mine before 30k mi. Rarely use them. Replaced under warranty. Still very annoying. E-brake trim has broken off a couple times, too. Starting to think car is made of legos.

Hi all,

Just to share some findings. I have a 2010 MCS and experience the same broken hinges on the vanity mirrors.

Manage to get replacement from scrapyard. See attached picture. New top (grey) is the replacement and the bottom (beige) are the ones taken out of my car.

Noticed that the mirrors are supplied by at least 2 different vendors to Mini. The replacement was made in 2009 and mine was 2010. The 2009 replacements were way sturdier and the material gives more confidence. Had a manufacturer marking whereas the 2009 seems OEM (from China perhaps).

Therefore, if you are going to get replacements, get it from the scrapyards and make sure it's with the markings and not the newer fragile kind. I supposed the new replacements are also from this new manufacturer.

My driver visor door on a 3/2008 build lasted until 2013. Wifes used regularly. Bought a replacement online back then. Passenger side rarely used. This year, about Feb time frame, both of them went out within days of each other. The plastic on the door itself fatigues and crumbles away. Wasn't about to pony up $260 for visors and have never found one in a junkyard. So I took my smallest drill bit (1/64), and drilled holes where the hinges are in both the door and the base holder. Removal of the visor makes it much easier. I had some stainless steel material (thin extremely rigid rod that was the same diameter. I cut short hinge pins, bent a 90degree short section on one end of each, then bent a slight wave in each and forced them through the holes. The wave in the wire acts like a friction washer, and the 90degree bend prevents the pin from twisting and working loose. They have been in for 6 months now, and work nearly perfect. The passenger side is a little loose, sagging about 1/8" when down holding the windshield sun visor in place, so I really need to pull the pins out and increase the wave to stiffen them up, but since that visor is up 99% of the time, its very low on my priority list. I might just try a small piece of velcro to hold it shut. They will NEVER break now. I used a black Sharpie to color the small exposed SS section black and it is invisible.

Within the last 6 months, both visor mirrors had tab failure (they actually are bending breaking at the base of the plastic tab) and the mirrors fell out whenever the visors were opened. There is almost nothing behind the mirror to attach velcro. Not a mechanic so anything more advanced than velcro is likely beyond my capabilities... :-(

My wife's '09 Clubman passenger's visor mirror just fell off. We don't even use it! The only time we put the visor down is when we put the windshield shade up. Two of the four tabs are broken. Unacceptable, especially since they broke for no reason. The tabs should not break if the whole mirror is not even being pulled out of the visor -- not even if the mirror is being used. I'm not going to pay $90 for a new visor. Hopefully I can find a way to make this stick in the visor.
