2004 MCS steering querey

Power-assist steering went out during long, hot trip in the mountains, but was able to drive two hours home. Drove the car a day later and the steering is back to normal. Any thoughts on what's going on?

check fluid level . if low add . gotta use the mini stuff . if not low; is it extra loud? this means pump going south . if rack leaking you may need seals .
sometimes intermittent means rack . turn lock to lock and see if it's dodgy .could indicate rack . put up on ramps and start it ,then turn on a/c . this will turn p.s. fan on imedeately . if fan doesn't come on look for obstructions. unplug and check plug for power . if power then you need fan .
