Noise / ticking from transmission

Hi guys.. I just picked up an 05 MCS 6speed manual - stock no mods, 38,000kms. I have driven the car for just one fill up and have noticed a noise that is worrying me!

When the car is in neutral there is a ticking type noise coming from the tranmission. i can hear it from inside the car very clearly and the best way i can describe it is that it is similar to when you put a playing card into a spinning bike wheels.

When i press the clutch pedal the noise goes away and will come back when i release the pedal. When i press the throttle in neutral the ticking noise increases in speed. i cannot tell if it is making the noise as i drive the car because the engine/exhaust noise drowns out the ticking. regardless if the car is warmed up (1 hour driving) or not, the noise always returns when the car is in neutral.

has anyone here experienced such a thing in their car and if so what was the prognosis?

Thanks!

Does it sorta make the engine sound like a diesel motor ?

If so I have heard this in r53's before and it is even more noticable in those MINI's which have had a clutch / flywheel upgrade.

It is just gearbox/clutch chatter, it is somewhat normal and completely harmless. Anyway, the fix involves pulling the transmission and replacing the dual mass flywheel with a new one, which isnt really worth it to just fix a noise IMO.
