Coolant Disappearing???

So yea I was just hanging around in my Mini when the engine temp light comes on. So i let it cool down and checked the coolant level, turns out it was under low. So I bought coolant and filled it up, and drove around for a little bit. Next morning I check the level again and its back to the same spot. Dont see a leak anywhere and my oil is fine (my father told me to check that for some reason), any one know where its going ???

Does a sweet smell come through the air when you turn your cabin air on? That will be a sign that your heater core is fractured.

Also, if there is a light greasy film on the inside of your windows that's extremely hard to get off it's usually coolant vapor that's condensed... another sign of the fractured heater core.

Heater cores usually fail with a ton of miles on them and 9000 seems way to early, but you should still check those symptoms.

After your Mini warms up you should check for white smoke in the exhaust to see if coolant is somehow getting in the combustion chamber. You might have to have someone watch you so you can do some drive bys... heck use a video camera.

How exactly did you check the oil for coolant?

The reason your Dad had you check the oil was to see if the coolant was getting into the oil, usually from a head gasket leak. Two things to check, associated with the oil. 1) Is the oil level going up (coolant adding to the oil increasing the volume of fluid) and 2) the color of the oil especially at the oil fill cap (on the valve cover) to see if it is tan colored instead of the normal brown oil color (like adding cream to your coffee).

The Gen 1 Mini's had a problem with the coolant thermostat housing leaking at low mileage but I do not know of the Gen 2 Mini's have the same problem. The thermostat housing leak can be a little hard to detect especially if you do not park your car in the same place at night or do not notice the puddle under your car. You usually cannot detect the housing leak when the engine is running.

Sounds like you are still under warranty so a trip to the dealer would be advised.

You will probably need to buy a pressure checker/tester for your radiator. Simply pressurize the system and look/listen for the leak.

Hell, if you're under warranty you can end the madness right there!

Have this same problem with my VW GTI. I must have had at least 5 vacuum tests performed by the dealers and it shows no loss of pressure. There's no leaking anywhere, it's not mixing with the oil, nobody knows where it's going. My problem doesn't happen every 24 hours, but I do have to top off the coolant every few months, or when the display screams, "STOP! SHUT ENGINE! CHECK COOLANT!". I just top it off and keep on movin'
