P2096 Code Question
P2096 Code Question
Two tanks ago I got a check engine light with the code P2096. This is a complicated one as it could mean several problems, o2 sensor, cat, air leak.
The fuel I was running when it threw the light was not a national brand. I have since ran through 1 full tank of shell (my normal brand) and a quarter tank of shell with a bottle of techron. The light has since gone out.
Do think that bad gas caused the code? The code is still stored in the ecu, will the car pass inspection with that code in there even though the light is out?
Any other advice?
Thanks

I have had my car to the dealer for this three times, and it is still coming back.
So far the fixes they have tried are:
-Update ECU
-Full ECU reset
-replace cracked intake tube
I still think it is the 02 sensor... My mileage is horrid and my exhaust tips are black. The car probably thinks it is running lean and is adding fuel to compensate.

I have the same code (P2096) for a week now. The exhaust tips are black and there is no indication that the car is running lean. Mileage is the same as before (26-27 mpg). My car is an 03 MCS with 95Kmiles on the clock. No mods except the 15% pulley.
After reading few threads about P2096, it seems that the first thing to try is a software update to redefine the parameters. If the code comes back, then look for mechanical problems with cat, intake, O2 sensor, etc. Does this sound reasonable? I have to get this sorted out relatively soon because I need a smog test before 6/14 to be able to register the car (great timing).
Thanks in advance for any inputs on this.

I have had this problem ever year around this time, it seems to be when the gas gets changed over from the Winter blend to the Summer blend. I have NEVER changed my o2 sensor or anything else, I would just clear the code with my Scangauge, some times it took a month for it to go away. So far this year I haven't got the code yet. Just my 2 cents.

05' MCS, mods... 15% pulley, catback and CAI. I've had the code for over a year and seemed to appear shortly after the catback. It was my 2nd mod. CAI being the 1st and the pulley being the last. I just replaced the rear o2 sensor and did the reset. But like Volki, The light stays off until I turn off the car and then restart. After restart the light comes back. I personally think it's the catback but I don't really know for sure. I also had a P0456 code but after replacing the o2 sensor it has since been gone. Still have the P2096 though. I'd like some ideas other than the battery yank and rest thing which I don't know how that helps as the tester resets things for you anyway.
0456 back again.
Well after a short time I did a recheck on the codes. P2096 still there and the 0456 is back. When I spoke to the Mini Dealer they had no clue waht a smoke test was so I guess I can forget about them doing that for me. I guess I'll replace the o2 sensor up front and check for some leaks on my own. The manual says the sensors should be replaced after 50k-70k miles anyway.

I still have the P2096. No leaks in the exhaust system (not done by a smoke test, though). Either I can try to figure out whether the O2 sensors are the culprit here or just had the dealer "reset" the system. We'll see...
I have the same code a yr ago.
brought it to the shop and replaced the oxygen sensor.
another code came after. Reset dme, reflash ecu from dealer no work.
tried all leak test. nothing.
finally on the oxygen harness? I have no idea.
The code was gone until now.

There is a TSB on this, S.I. M120106, it isnt the 02 sensor.
The fix listed is basically to check the intake, the exhaust and the vacuum system for leaks by using a smoke machine. Also check fuel pressure, TMAP sensor, and injectors.
Turned out to be a bad bypass valve in my case...

I just had the "reset dme, reflash ecu" combo done at the dealer. The light is off now, and I just need it to be off until Monday morning when I need to get a smog test. If it comes back later on, I'll look into it further to determine what the reason is...
Has anyone cleared this code "for good" by dme reset and ecu reflash only?

The light stayed off and the car passed the smog test without a problem. If it comes back again, I'll investigate it further.
The tech at the dealer said he has seen P2096 in older models at every 3-4 years, and an ECU flash always took care of it. We'll see....

i got a p2096 check engine too and i just change the second o2 sensor, the one after the cat, i clear the code and it never come back
i bought a walker sensor from ebay less expensive then a dealer one and it do the same job

Hate to bring up an old thread but how much does that typically run for the dealer to do an ecu flash update?
