All the exterior chrome on the MINI is plastic so whatever it is should rub out unless it's been damaged by a harsh chemical or scratched.

Thats correct , the trim is metalized plastic, so any stains have to be chemical in nature. Harsh cleaners will discolor them.

Other people with the same problem have had these trim pieces replaced under warranty.

i had the problem and the service lady went out to see with me. the car is 6 months old and it rubbed right off with a finger apply pressure...i'm going to keep an eye on it but something is funny there.

I have similar discoloration on some of my trim pieces. It did not rub off. I was tempted to have the dealer look at it, but instead opted to black it out with 3M tape. No more problems.

i'd go to the dealer incase you don't want the black. i mean if its covered you may as well have it replaced

where this rust wiped right off with a little pressure: are you sure there isn't something similar on your paint? sometimes this 'rust' is actually some sort of deposit that's falling on the car in the form of dust with a metal content that then rusts on the surface. any metal working or construction around? someplace with metal grinding? i occasionally generate this problem in my own garage....depending on the color paint you may not see it like you do on the chrome
