Tighten up the shifter?

My 2003 MCS shifter is not as solid as it used to be. Its by no means bad but you can wiggle the shifter just a little while in neutral. It used to be very firm and not wiggle. What needs to be replaced to bring back the firm feel?

Thanks,
k

May be the bushing on the shifter ietself? I'll will install my SS in the next few weeks but saw they gave Al bushing with to tighten up shifting more, so i can only think that it might be the cause of your problem.

The 2003 condition “A” shifter set is sloppy to begin with; if yours was ever tight you are fortunate. The bushings on the shifter are nylon at all ends and will wear over time. Pull the shifter ring & boot up and look at the collar collet over the pivot ball to be sure it hasn’t unsnapped from a tab. Some SS shifter shafts have a larger pivot ball and tighter gate arm bushing which will remove some slop. I have a Fidanza (for condition “A” assembly only) and it made a difference. Swapping the rubber grommets for metal below the box will have no effect on the shaft wiggle you mentioned, but you can add an extra rubber washer on the shaft end and it will dampen some of the wiggle. Fresh chassis grease on the ball and shifter ends helps also.

Do you know if there are going to be any aftermarket replacements for the shifter holding assembly itself? That gives too much and adds to the slop feel of my shifter.
