Engine noise increasing, smoothness fading away

my engine has become very loud the last few months. almost making a vibration noise at times. and at 3000-4000 RPMs if i gently let go of the gas the engine seems to make a "im stuck at this gear" noise, it holds it for a few seconds and then sounds drops down. it also likes to cut out on a cold morning at startup when i hit the gas. mine is at 30,000 miles 2007 MCS w/cold air intake, 6 speed manual. i dont mind having a loud engine but its becoming a bad loud. its loosing the smooth sound and feel.

i find it hard to believe im the only one that has ever has this problem on here again, its after the car warms up, if i tap the gas around 3000 RPMs there is a weird change in engine sound, like a louder buzzing mechanical engine sound (its coming from the engine). engine was fine until we had a few -15 degree days and now it does this all the time.

I'm responding so you don't feel left out of the loop. I am far from an expert on Mini's. When an engine hangs up it could be a number of issues. Have you checked the vacuum lines or checked for an air leak somewhere in the system? Your trottle body could be dirty or you could have an engine management computer going out. There are a number of possible faults. It's very difficult to offer any sound advice without hearing how the motor is acting. Might be time for a trip to the shop. Sorry I could not be more help. Try the vacuum/air leak first. Dan

Your only mod is the cold air intake. Has something come loose?

Bad sound could be a timing chain. There's been some discussion about replacing the chain tensioners in the cold start thread as well.

IMHO I think if it is a timing chain, you would hear the noise through out the rev range but more so at low idle/speeds. The chain would not cause the engine to "hang up". Let us know what the dealer says. Dan

bad timing chain tensioner. going in in two days to have my engine cracked open and repaired. car sound HORRIBLE right now, but was told no damage was being done. needless to say, im looking at several certified AUDI TT 3.2 DSGs to replace the MINI. we'll see what happens.
