no power to wheels!!!!

So a new problem arises,

My wife was driving home when all of a sudden there is no power to the wheels, she was in gear, going around a corner, there was no noises, no leaks, no smells, nothing!! I get in the car and it starts fine, try to put it in gear and it feels fine, tried them all, even reverse, clutch feels ok, its like the motor is completely seperated from the transmission.

Anyone have any advice?? besides setting it on fire

Thanks,

Jake

So does anyone have a diagram/pic of how the engine/clutch/trans work together and how do I get to the half shaft, or a link to a diagram?

Thanks,

Jake

www.realoem.com will show you the parts the half shafts are the drive axles to the front wheels. With a open diff Mini only 1 wheel drives and if one of the axles break it will just sit and not move the car. Do you have the 5 speed or 6 and what year? It could also be the clutch or tranny but the axle fits this problem better.

Not to say its not but when you did this was the other wheel on the ground or both in the air?

If the tranny is in neutral, one wheel on the ground, the other wheel can turn freely.. you are turning the tranny input shaft, if the tranny is in gear and this happens, then you have stripped something, some dif gears, the axle splines where they fit into the outer hub.

I'll go with 03BRG, sounds like one of the CV shaft joints bit the bullet.
Symptoms fit.

CV joints can & do go bad. It has been my experience that they make a wail of a racket before they do & make that noise for quite a while before their complete failure.

I'm thinking it is clutch related. An outside very remote possibility is a broken main shaft in the transmission.

I hope it is only the clutch. Let us know what it is when you find out.

Good luck.

As one O.F. to another, I agree it could be the clutch, but I've had at least two CV joints go out on me (VW GTi and Toyota Corolla) both while in the middle of a turn, and both without a sound -and no pre-breaking noises. Almost like someone stole the tranny: one minute it's driving just dandy; the next 'vrooom, vroooom!' -no move.

Thanks fellow O.F. never heard of that before, but I do believe you. I hope for the OP's sake it is a CV joint failure.

Amen, brother. Muuuuuuch cheaper than a tranny or clutch. And a lot less down time.

Hi, i thank you all for the input, and right now both wheels are off the ground, when the cars in neutral turn one wheel and the other doesnt spin, i guess thats ok, when i put in in gear, 1st, turn one wheel the other moves! ok, so i start the car and it spins the wheels now!!, So im thinking the clutch has suffered some failure, my wife may have overfilled the engine with oil, maybe that got past the seal and ruined the clutch, because there is more oil under the clutch housing than normal.

Thanks in advance,

Jake
