What is the story with these?

Anyone have any probles with them?

Flats?
Punctures?
Excessive wear?
How long can you run on em?
Treadlife?
How much to replace?

Thx as always

I have the 17" Dunlop SP 9000 Sport DSST tires and got a nail in one of them right before my trip to Canada.

The dealership wanted $271

I paid overnight shipping to the tune of $53 and then $20 to get them installed at an installer that the Tire Rack had already confirmed was qualified to work on Run Flats. Obviously you could save on the shipping if you weren't as time pressed as I was to get one.

I have 11,000 miles on mine and would expect that they should be good for about 25-30k miles before you got to the wear indicators.

Update: I just put on the MINI R84 V-spokes and the Yokohama AVS ES100 205/50 R16 tires. So I now have the R90's/Run-Flats off the car.

Here's what a closer inspection found:

Front:
Right and Left: only about 20% of usable tread left after 11,000 miles. Evenly worn.

Rear tires:
Right: 3,000 miles (Brand New before Canada trip)
Left: About 3/4 tread depth of the right with 8,000 more miles on it

DaveInDenver,
Do you think you will still get 25-30k miles on those tires?

I still think 25k is possible for the Rears Only (especially if you don't drive enthusiastically very often). My rears will probably last about 20k. The fronts on the other hand are probably going to be done in at around 13 k.

It's a bit of a moot point in my case though as I no longer plan on using the run flats for anything except road trips.

I have the Perilli run flats and I did get a screw in a tire. I was away from home when this happened, in Miami, and I went to a Sears Auto Center to get it fixed. They said that they was not authorized to fix it and told me I had to go to Goodyear or Firestone to get it fixed. They were all closed in the area, so I read the manual saw that I could drive up to 50 mph with a flat. So I drove 75 miles home and later got it fixed at the dealership. I may have went faster than 50 on my home. I can't tell if they plugged it, or patched it. Where the hole was is a little gummy, so I was thinking that they plugged it. I keep my car clean, so I could not tell if they took the tire off or not. I also had to wait for a long time, so they did the job for free, so I did not get a invoice to see what they had done.

I will have the run flats as part of the sport pkg on my Cooper. When it comes time to replace them, any suggestions?

Are the tires not rotatable? Do you have to replace them on the front once you've ground them down?

Oh dear, I didn't tell the wife about that one....

MINI tells you not to rotate the tires. I do know that people are rotating MINI tires anyway.

So you could either rotate them (front to back) and replace all 4 at once. OR you could just replace the fronts first, then when those wear down again, replace all 4.

Either way, the fronts wear a lot faster.

I think the manual says that you shouldn't do a half rotate (left to right, or vice versa..) My manual's not handy, so i can't confirm... but why wouldn't you want to rotate the tires?

the runflats are unidirectional, aren't they?

they'd have to un- then re-mount the tires from the rims.

A couple of observations:
1. Rotating Left --> Right (or vice versa) should be a no-no; even more so with "directional" tires, as they would have to be remounted.
2. Rotating Front --> Back (or vice versa) should be OK; won't affect direction of rotation, or the "set" that radials are supposed to take.

Finally, when I had a 911, I had a similar problem regarding tires. Although it was "reversed"; as all of the weight (and power) was on the rear. I got 40K miles on front tires (even very sticky "performance" tires), and 20K miles (max) on the rears. I simply picked a good, quality tire (BFG Comp T/A's, at one time; Pirelli P7's another), and replaced the rears twice for every set of fronts. You just have to make sure that you pick a brand that will "be there" in a year or two, so you don't have to replace all four!

yep - agree

I guess I forgot the MINI has same size front and rear. The 911 I had was race prepped and had meatier rears and the Ferrari 328 is the same way (wider rears) so I haven't been able to rotate tires.

I average new tires on the Ferrari between every 8k and 15k miles and replace all four at once. I figure the MINI will be the same, one or two good track days and you scrub a pretty signifigant chunk of rubber off of any tire.

If I can get more than 15k miles before replacing all four tires I'll be happy I guess... it's actually nice to try out different tires every so often on the same rims and car to really understand the difference the rubber makes.

p.s. I GOT MY VIN ASSIGNED YESTERDAY! Estimated production still 9/27!

Thanks Dave

Funnily enough, growing up in Scotland you would have thought we actually had one of these, but we had Ford Cortinas, and Ford Capris....cant think of a single person in my family who ever owned one, sad isnt it !!!
