Boot Opens While I Am Driving?

So this is now the second time it has happened. I did not think much of it the first time this happened. Now its been two weeks since the first time and it happened yesterday again. Has anyone heard of this problem?

Thanks,
JJ

Is it opening because it is getting a false electrical signal to release the latch, or is it just popping loose because the latch didn't mechanically catch properly?

I have seen a few latches with water in them causing the latch to open on its own whenever it feels like it. If you want take the latch off and flip it over. see if any water comes out.

they replaced the hatch handle due to corrosion from water in the switch

It'll happen again, then. Happened on my Gen1 as well. Search on "boonk" (the sound a Gen1 makes when the hatch opens) to see a solution...

Here ya go:

Not too difficult to fix at all, basically waterproof the switch. Don't know why Mini would still have this problem, have heard of it in several cars.

Good luck!

This happened to me on my Porsche Cayenne. They replaced the switch three times already in a nation wide recall. There can be a problem with electronic switches and water. What happened to the good old mechanical ones? Seems to happen more on hatchbacks, SUVs and Station Wagons.

I am hoping that this is not a continual problem on the Mini as well. But it does happen to many makes.

Harumph! It's not a terribly difficult fix, either! Although, I notice that whenever I wash mine or it rains (mine's a 2006, mind you) if I open the hatch I still get some trapped water that runs down. You'd think Mini would've noticed that in the design/prototype phase - and not let it repeat into the GenI models!

Ah well, the post I reference above has some DIY tips in there, and somebody can likely waterproof it much better than me -I think simply removing the cloth anti-rattle tape will keep much of the moisture away from the switch.
