What does MINIUSA mean by the rear Foglight being optional?

I found this out at The official 2004 Model Year Changes

P.S. Does anyone have a picture of it?

all the minis have a rear fog light on the top part of the tail light

in the 02-03 minis this light didnt work from the factory

so a lot of people including me used paper clips or wires to do some wiring and used the top lights for extra break lights, for extra visibility

but people wnated the toggle switch so that they could control the rear top light, used as fog light in europe

thus mini is offering them in 04, and retrofitting them on the 02-03 for like 75 bucks or something i heard

i like the way mine is now, and am happy with it

hope thats a good enough explanation

It will be a dealer installed option that uses the one remaining blank toggle switch spot to turn them on/off. The actual light itself will illuminate the top red portion of the rear light housing (the bottom--under turn signal--is the brake light).

i think i've read earlier over here about some people thinking of having manual control over the rear fog light, so that they could use it to warn away those annoying tailgaters. this option would allow that, i think.

but how's about if we wanted to link up the brake light mod for brighter brake lights, but also have the capability to manually flick the rear fog on and off for those annoying tailgaters. in other words, have a dual purpose rear foglight.

i guess this shouldn't be much of a problem anyways though cause we shouldn't have much of a problem with tailgaters, at least on the twisties and curves.

imo the only way to get rid of tailgaters is to slam on your brake hard and have them buy you a new car

Tailgating means that they are keeping up. Doesn't happen much to me except in school zones.

Rear fog lights will be available beginning with the 2004 model year MINI as a DEALER INSTALLED OPTION for $75-$100 which includes a new toggle switch panel (The existing factory toggle switch panel can not be retrofitted with the single switch) and reprogramming of the DME to allow the activation of said lights. The price does not include labor, which based on what I have been told, could be anywhere from 1 to 3 hours since the center dashboard needs to be taken apart to fit the new toggle switch panel and possibly run some additional wiring. At $95 average hourly labor rate you are talking about $385 just to have the rear fogs retrofitted.

As of December 2003 builds, the rear fog lights will be offered as a FACTORY INSTALLED OPTION, thus much cheaper since no dealer labor surcharge will be added to the final price.

I want to have the rear fogs enabled in my upcoming '04 MCS (Sept '03 build) but the deal braker will be the actual labor costs which I am trying to negotiate down with the dealer.
