LSD questions/testing

Ok guys so I have a question.!! I finally picked my car up this last Thursday. On the drive home I noticed a little bit of smoke and found that a oil line to the turbo was slightly leaking and needed to be tightened. So on Friday I took it in just to show the dealer and let them fix it. The mechanic was super cool and even brought me back into the service area to take a look and show they had everything cleaned, tightened and ready. I was super happy and the car was still in the air so I thought I would see if the LSD was really installed in my car(joking with the mechanic). So I turned the left front wheel 360 degrees about five times and the right wheel did nothing at all. I asked the mechanic and he did not say anything but that it has the LSD. In my M3 when the car is in the air I can turn one rear wheel and the opposite wheel will turn in the opposite direction. WHATS UP OR HOW DO I REALLY TEST THE LSD IN THE MINI? Is a front wheel drive car LSD work differently than a rear wheel drive? [/SIZE]

I got 20 miles on the car dont really want to tach it up and dump the clutch. Thought someone would have a good idea on how to test it.

yes quite! sorry about that I linked the wrong thread...

i would suggest either finding or devising a situation where one front wheel has little or no traction and the car is stationary. if in that position you can accelerate gently and move the car forward then i think the point is proved.

the thread i intended to link had some practical and some rather amusing approaches to that, but all had the concept.

"The unit, manufactured by GKN Driveline, is a torque-sensitive differential that manages torque output under acceleration and offers a 30% slip rate. This means, there is no loss of torque if the difference in grip between the two wheels is 30 % or less. "
Ref: [http://www.motoringfile.com/2004/12/...differential/]

Here's more on the GKN: http://www.gkndriveline.co.uk/drivel...icle_0011.html

The nature of this unit seems to explain your ability to rotate one wheel without disturbing the other. I have a Quaife (gear type) and to be honest I haven't tried the test you performed - it may be the Quaife would also permit a single wheel to rotate under those circumstances.

Hey thanks a lot CMT
I understand now (I THINK). I will jack one side up tomorrow and place a block or something under the other wheel to see if it puts all the power to the blocked wheel and not the airborne one. I must have been thinking more rear wheel drag car diffs with possi in them that will lock up both wheels without the 30% torque.
If you have your car in the air anytime soon let me know as I would like to see your results. If only one wheels spins!!!

Somewhat OT, but I thought w/mechanical LSD when you turn a rear wheel, the other turns in the same direction; it's with an open rear that it turns in the other direction? Not questioning your M3 having it at all... rather just questioning my understanding of the mechanics.

Actually, one of my cars has LSD and the other not, so I should just get out the jack and try it. Oh darn, wifie is leaving for the movies w/the one equipped w/LSD.

Well I was told I had LSD in my M3 but hell I ordered it in the mini and says it has it on the build sheet but I am not so sure(YET) and same goes for the M3.Its a thing that a car builder could leave out to make more money on you but could also be a lawsuit.
I did not get to test the mini today as I had to go get me collage classes set up for next term but tomorrow for sure

What I think happens is on the mechanical when its in the air the wheels will spin in opposite directions but on the ground its doing what it should and having the power spread to the wheel that has the traction or locking both up to keep traction. I also think if you have possi track rear-end its always locked up and both wheels will spin in the same direction in the air. I am going to jack DADS 69 camaro up that has possi and see what happens. I am learning a lot from such a little car LOL.
