03 MINI fan won't go off!

My wife just had tires put on her mini today and when she got home, the fan has been on at least 20 minutes since she shut it off! How can we shut the cooling fan off? Any suggestions as to what the problem may be would be very helpful. It is an 03 mini coupe with low mileage.

If the fan continues to run for a short time and then shut off, it may be that the engine is trying to overheat. However, the early version fans do fail and run on until the battery is depleted. Check the cooling system for proper operation, and have the fan assembly tested.

My fan has stuck on twice...

to keep the fan from killing the battery, either disconnect the battery, or the fan by pulling the multi-pin connector you'll see on the top of the rad - driver's side.

Most commonly this problem develops from a failure in the fan controller. The bad news is the way this is fixed is replacing the entire fan assmbly and that will run about $600

The fan can also get stuck on if your coolant got too low (due to a weaping recovery tank) and air gets into the system. This allows a sensor to get confused and the fan stays on. You'll need to top off the coolant and bleed the system....or that's what the dealer will do. This costs MUCH less then option 1. I had this once and even with replacing the tank it was like $120 at the dealer. The routing of the coolant hoses allows air to get trapped and is why the system needs to be bled....there are bleeder valves.

p.s. this is for an 03? .... wrong forum....this is GEN2.....

That was it and to my surprise, even after closing hours, when we took it in, they gave her a new mini loaner!!! This is just remarkable service if you ask me! Checkered Flag mini service is the best!

What was it? Air in the system or the fan controller? Mine just did this today. I have unplugged the fan to keep from killing the battery. I just spent $300 for a new fuel pump, and now this. Having a hard time saving up for new tires!

Not sure which it was, but will let ya know when the wife gets in. I've owned lots of cars, and the ones I kept after 50K miles were the ones that usually start to have problems so its pretty much a given that after 40K, brakes (pads and rotors), fuel pump, fan, and a few other things that go $$$$ in the wallet usually need replacing no matter how well you car for the thing. It is after all a car and parts wear out!
