My Windows No Workie-Jerkie...

Its now warm outside and I can only use the sunroof (i refuse to use AC after a devastatingly long Chicago winter). BOOOO! Last fall, my passenger side window stopped working one day. It was on strike for about a week, and then worked for a few days before finally quitting. Dealer (who i NEVER go to...) wanted to charge me $500 for a new motor. My mechanic friend took the motor apart and replaced the worn brushes inside. Worked beautifully!!! However, a few weeks back my driver's side window pooped out; it did the same thing as the passenger window. Then after that, the passenger window stopped! What gives?! I have no idea if these other events are related but- once last summer my lights both interior and exterior didn't work. I turned off the car, turned it on..nothing. Tried that once again and everything worked. The day both my windows stopped working, the stereo wouldn't turn on for several hours. Even after many trips in and out of the car. Then it randomly started to work. Semi related: after my friend fixed my window, the silver plastic thing that goes around the door handle will pop out. I'm sure I lost a clip somewhere along the lines, but is there a way to fix this or prevent it from happening again? thanks guys and dolls!

Same thing happened to me. There are at least 2 other posts about this same problem.

Which problem? The electrical one or the site's nasty habit of removing indents? The second one
bugs me the
most.

From the other posts I got the advice that worked for me. My drivers side window was stuck in the up position. The advice was to hold the window switch either up or down, and hit the door panel between the door handle and the speaker. You have to hit it pretty hard. What happens is as the motor brushes wear the dust created makes the brushes stick, and not float on the armature of the motor. They are spring loaded, and are supposed to push down maintaining contact with the armature. When they stick the surface wears to the point that contact is lost, and the motor will not work. When you hit the door panel, and loosen the brushes to be able to be pushed onto the armature of the motor, it works again. I discussed this with several people, and this is a common problem with power windows on any car regardless of make and model.
