The glove box in my 05 Cooper S broke a few weeks ago so I finally broke down and spent the $240 to replace it. I have the new box installed but I can not figure out how to remove the key cylinder from the old glove box. The dealer told me it was easy but did not tell me how to do it. I tried for a while tonight but I can not see how to remove. Any ideas?
Thanks
Jeff
Am I missing something from the post? I was actually able to get a used key lock working with my existing key. I held the latch open while I inserted my key and to my surprise, it opened. It now works with my key.

There was an attachment that has since been erased.
I have an 05 S also and my glove box door got stuck in the closed postion. I put my new registration in it 4 months ago closed it. Tried to open it two nites ago and no chance. The handle moves but will not open.
So I broke it last nite. Do i have to replace the whole door, glove box or what? Does any one know? HELP

I think that answer would depend on what broke with it. I guess if it's just not opening when you press the release, it sounds like the release mechanism isn't working right. Which could be either the whole assembly isn't sitting in the proper spot or it has some internal failure. But those are just guesses.

Thanks for those Minidrivr. They will help when it come to replace the glove box.
The next question is do you know of a place to get a new glove box besides the dealer?
BIG THANKS MiniDrivr. This is exactly what I was looking for!
MININRG I order a used glove box off of eBay for $45. My dealer was selling it for $140 new. I've seen prices in the $250 range from other members online. They get these glove boxes out of totaled Minis and are usually in like new shape.

Maybe Pelican Parts if you have the part numbers? Works for some OEM stuff I've tried.

Had my new-to-me '05 MCS Convertible a whole week before the glovebox got jammed and I broke the latch prying it open.
Have replacement box in, but cannot figure out how to get the lock cylinder out of the old.
Looks like there was an attachment here at one point in time with instructions, but... long gone now! My Bentley guide makes no mention, haven't found any other relevant threads, so...
can somebody please tell me how to get the lock cylinder out of my old glovebox and into the new?

Had a similar issue when I installed a refurbished box in my '03 - it was from an '05 and I wanted to be able to use my key in the lock. After trying everything I could to get the cylinder out, one day while I had the key in and the latch held open, I turned the key and now my key has been able to lock and open the latch ever since. I wonder if it was a un-advertised feature to allow you to rekey the lock without having to replace any parts - No one at my MINI dealer had any clue of this, but it worked and I have been using it for over two years!
I found information on another site that indicated if you turn the key 1/2 way between open and locked and tug gently on the key the cylinder will slide out. Tried it on mine and it works great!

This just saved me from a bunch of frustration. Loving this site!
My problem is that the replacement box has no lock cylinder at all, so I need to get the old one out and into the new box!
New glove box HERE if needed. Yes, the lock cylinder HERE comes separate from the glove box. For anyone who orders both parts they come with free shipping.
Very old topic but FWIW....
I've always wanted a locking glove box for my 04 R53.
Several months back I was lucky enough to score a beautiful one, in perfect condition from an 05 R52 while at a salvage yard
I was even lucky enough that this glove box wasn't locked. I planned on re-keying it to work with my original Mini key.
Today I spent a fair amount of time googling ' how to disassemble a Mini glove box so I could remove the handle and lock assembly.
Although I could find no information as to how - While looking at the glove box itself and locking handle; I still couldn't see a way to remove it without damage or breaking the plastic.
So I inserted my key into the lock (of course it didn't work), to jiggle it around in an effort to spot any connecting points that may give a clue as to where to start.
While pulling the key about 3/4 of the way out, the key turned!- I was able to lock and unlock the glove box as long as the key is only inserted 3/4 of the way into the lock.
I just now found this thread an thought I'd share
Locking glove box I scored from a salvage yard '05 R52!
My original '04 R53 key inserted about 3/4 in to the glove box lock.
My key inserted 3/4 of the way into the lock turns, locks and locks the glove box!
Pretty cool.
But do I plan on installing this glove box in my 04 R53 without a proper fitting key the way it is?
Probably not
EDIT: I did try the trick as stated above (* Insert key. Turn half way .Gently pull the lock cylinder out) but it hasn't worked for me - yet.

Did you ever resolve this?
My ‘03 R53’s glove box has been popping open with every bump I hit. I found a salvage yard with an ‘06 R50 that had a decent glove box. I pulled the five torx T20 screws and grabbed it (the center-most screw by the upright struts was difficult to get out because of the struts—I imagine that’s going to be the one I struggle to get installed without losing the screw).
The door on the salvage unit is darker than mine (it looks to be black, like the one pictured by Pelican above, whereas mine is a dark grey, like the one you pictured above). And it has a lock which obviously I don’t have a key to operate. My ‘03 did not have a lock. But I’ll suffer being unable to operate the lock so long as I can get in…. I’m tired of the box popping open, especially when I have passengers.
