cooling fan question

i am having an overheating problem. the car is fine while driving, but overheats if you sit still. antifreeze boiled out once.

50 amp fuse for fan blows if fan is plugged in. does not if not plugged in. the fan does not run from what i can tell.

ran hot wires straight to the connectors for the fan plug, and a groiund to a bolt on the bumper mount... they heated up, but no fan response.

is this teh fan itself or the resistor that i keep reading about? also is there a way to bypass the resistor and test the fan itself? can i fix this with some kind of wiring setup, or is replacing the whole assy the only way out?

also i thought about an aftermarket fan, and the prob i found is that i think the oem fan is 2speed. is this the case? can i run an aftermarket without the resistor?

3 wires go into the resistor and 2 into the fan. so i am assuming the resistor is some kind of relay. one wire is ground one is always hot, and the other i assume is the trigger cause from reading others posts it is not always hot, but if 12v is supplied to it then the other guys fan would work. mine still did not.

also how is the second speed triggered? i see 2 relays under the fuse panel, but how is that set up?

so nobody else knows either?

well here is what i found out. the fan is actually stuck. i can not turn the blades by hand. so the only way i can figure to fix it, without spending $300 would be to pull the fan and wire another one in. pretty sure that the resistor is not a problem.

three wires into the resistor and 2 out the fan. ground and hot to the resistor as well as a trigger wire. and +/- to the fan itself.

well no info so far... one more

is the fan speed controlled by voltage, or amperage?
