Inspection II

Hi, I just got my Mini (used) and am taking it in for Inspection II. It's got 63000 miles on it and Inspection I was never done!

NW Mini (Tacoma) told my $900 to start off, from what I've read around here I guess that's ballpark.

Question: When I turn the key to position 1 it says
Oil Service -37000
Inspection

How do I get it to tell me the miles to inspection? I realize I'm way over, but it's just blank in the display.

Thanks.

Inspection one should have been at about 26,000 (37,000 miles ago),
next oil service at about 41,000 (22,000 miles ago), and Inspection 2 at about
55,000 (8,000 miles ago). It'll be due for the next oil service at about 70,000 miles,
(7,000 miles from now).

Yeah, I checked the Maint Record and they haven't been back since the 1st oil change. They had the oil changed somewhere else, and there's a window sticker that says it's due again @ 57000, but I have no way of knowing how many miles were on it when they serviced it (no identification on sticker, just a generic decal) or if any maint was done between the 1st oil change and that service.

Am I getting zero miles to inspection on the display because it's so long overdue?

FWIW I'm having full service/Inspection 2 done on Tuesday.. just wondering about my display.

What exactly does the dealer do that costs $900.00? (!!) That's a lot of inspecting! My understanding is that it's just an oil filter and air filter change, plus some general vehicle component inspections. Seems like it should take less than an hour (two, at most), with well under $100.00 in parts, unless I'm missing something.

I guess if you have an automatic transmission and the Inspection II cost includes the auto fluid change, coolant change, and the brake fluid change, it may be worth around $400.00. At a quoted price of $900.00 it's a rip-off, plain and simple. I'd like to know the time estimate for the "checks", most of which are fairly simple visual inspections. A competent technician should be able to complete the whole inspection, including any fluid changes, in 2-3 hours tops.

There is no fluid change, BMW is of the mentality that all transmission fluids are "Lifetime".

Not sure on the official time estimates, but with "Book times" topping 16 hours for a clutch swap (I know for a fact that most mechanics could get it done in 6), I'm not sure it matters .

Well, I have a manual trans, so no fluid change.. Inspection II includes all items in Inspection I plus replace air cleaner element, poly-v belt, brake fluid, coolant, oxygen sensor & spark plugs. Pretty extensive list there, but I'm not happy about the $900 price tag either..

I assumed since Inspection I was never done on my car and it's way past due for II that that was a factor. BTW they said II takes all day - they're giving me a loaner til the day after. I found several previous posts about Inspection I costing anywhere from $500 to $650 depending on where you are, so the $900 wasn't really too surprising.

Anyone had Inspection II done? What did you pay?

That's great info rusty.
Is there a link to that all of the inspections/services?

Interesting that it seems that the car has to be inspected every 2 years for the rust warranty to hold up.

I would'nt worry about the rust on the MINI, with all of that yellow goop that they sprayed into the cavities we should be fine.

At the end of the day, you are paying BMW prices for Inspections. Most of the BMW inspections change out a few more items, but the prices are still fairly high, especially at dealers. I called around to local independent shops and they don't charge as ridiculous prices as the dealers do, but it is still significant. A few charged more for the Auto/CVT's because the tranny fluid is pretty expensive.

I am pretty sure you do spark plugs and 02 sensors at 100k miles. I either saw that in the owners manual or asked the dealer/independent shops.

This info is for the R53...I know this is in the R56 forum, but the OP's sig says he has an 05.

The information about spark plugs, 02 sensors, etc is from my warranty service book about what is done during Inspection II.

I don't know. Maybe because mines R53? Is that the list for R56?

I'm new here, so I'm not sure what all the differences are, but in my warranty service book for '05 it lists everything to be done in Inspection I (same list posted) and then under Inspection II it says Inspection II includes all items in Inspection I plus replace air cleaner element, poly-v belt, brake fluid, coolant, oxygen sensor & spark plugs. It doesn't specify a mileage for either inspection, but I believe if you follow the maintenance schedule for oil service you'd be past 63,000 by the time you got to the 2nd inspection. I'm assuming that since mine has never had the 1st inspection and hasn't ever been back to the dealer since the 1st oil service that that's why they're doing the 2nd on it (today).

OK, just talked to dealer for clarification, and they are not doing the oxygen sensor & spark plugs until 100,000 miles, but it is listed under Inspection II, because that usually happens around then.

MINI Inspection II

I checked out the MINI Inspection II at my local MINI dealership, Pittsburgh MINI. They quoted me $315.95 plus tax. I'm planning on getting this service done some time in August. From what you are saying, this sounds rather low! I had specifically asked about that service and I had written it down for future reference. Hope the dollar hasn't lost that much value.

Thanks for this over view. Mine is due for Inspec. II also bought used recently. I did the oil and that was 900 miles overdue. I turn the key once and it tells me the inspection is coming up. I have 51,000 on my 2005 MINI. So from these post I see that at 55,000 I'll need that inspct. II. But my engine light is coming on to say check soon. I don't need this expense so soon after purchase! Anyone know the cost of the inspect. II cannot be $900 like the other person says...
