Back Up Beep

Hi. I just bought a 2008 Cooper S Convertible. I LOVE IT. My only issue is that when I back her up, I hear and annoying voice that both freaks out me and my dog. I called the service dept. and the technician said the only way to get rid of the noise is to unplug fuse #4, which would be a bad thing for the power steering. Does anyone else find this feature extremely annoying... and how do I get rid of it?!
Thanks! Happy Motoring
Janice

You'll grow to love that back-up warning beeping very shortly, I assure you. Visibility in the convertible is pretty tough when backing so that noise is very helpful.

Besides, just how ofen are you backing close enough to objects to make it go off ? Not like you're hearing it more than 1 minute per day, right ?

Leave the spouse at home and the annoying voice should go away, it worked for me.

Welcome to NAM. Love the year/model, of course I'm biased. What color?

I believe the dealer can adjust the volume on the backup sensor. so at least you can turn it down.

Are you talking about the beeping from the backup sensor when you get close to an object, or does your car give one long beep as soon as you put it in reverse, whether you're near an object or not?

If your car always beeps once when you put it into reverse, that option can be turned off by the dealer. As for the backup warning sensor, the dealer can only adjust the volume, not disable it entirely.

Thanks - I kind of found out about the backup beep by accident. My wife and I both have 2006 'S' convertibles, and mine beeps when I put it in reverse, but hers doesn't. That's what clued me in that it's a programmable option.

I've *heard* that the optional long beep is a signal that some kind of a self-test on the backup sensors has completed successfully, but it also might just be a "hey, you're in reverse, dummy!" warning.

My back up sensor seems to work only at odd intervals. Sounds like an ice cream truck. I haven't worried about it much, but strangely, I've yet to parallel park in it. Of course, I can parallel park the big tree SUV just like I'm ringing a bell, so the MINI shouldn't present too much difficulty.

So, I noticed that mine beeps (loud, like a garbage truck!!) every time I back up... whether or not I am close to an object or not. Why? Because I have a bike rack on the back so the car ALWAYS thinks it's close to something. The dealers said there is nothing I can do about it since it's the convertible model.

^ true -- except, as noted above, they can adjust the volume.

The noise while backing up with bikes on the Sportlink rack was one of the annoyances I had. Recently though the noise has stopped. Not sure what has gone wrong.

I even told the wife to stand behind the car while I backup. She gave me a look and I told her trust me I was just testing the sensors.

Well!? Don't leave us in suspense... Did it beep or did you run over your wife.
By the way, I don't think that excuse will really hold up in court.
