Remember what a hot topic this was back in January? The hatch mechanism worked fine but the computer would randomly refuse to latch it. We'd have to fidddle with the buttons and such for 10 or 15 minutes until the computer finally gave in. This happened to me the first time I opened the hatch, and the 3rd time, and the 7th time, and...

Finally, after having had the hatch stuck open about 20 times in the first few weeks, I tried something. I simply closed the hatch, held it closed, and squeezed the handle for a couple of seconds. Five months have passed since I did that and the hatch hasn't stuck open a single time. The car was never taken to the dealer.

I haven't seen this topic come up in the last few months either. You don't suppose BMW over-engineered some sort of super-complex artificial intelligence hatchback computer that automatically adapts to, uh, the latch?

I'm not surprised! BMW has totally over engineered the MINI for it's $20,000 price tag. I can't believe what we get that is identical to what's on cars that cost well over $30,000.

Thanks for telling us the fix if the electronic latch freakes out!

If your boot refuses to close after repeated attempts (And all ad naseum remedies have been done) then your latch mechanism is broken and needs to be replaced.

Need no worry. If your dealer already carries the new updated parts, it is a 30 minute job tops to get them installed

Its been 9 months since we got our latch replaced and ZERO problems since.

BTW, it is a badly designed electric boot latch system. Hope it is revised for 2004 and it appears to be it is.

It is made by Valeo of France.

I took that bottom latch apart and noticed the hangup on the track.
I suggest if you get in a bind and this happens, try this to get you out of the jam quickly.

Just slap your hand down hard on the cover over the mechanism. The slide is barly getting hung up and it only takes slight vibration (that the servo is not capable of) to loosen it up.

Ive done this twice and helped another in the club once already.

funny,
I had the light on forever! I ignored it, then one day, poof, it went off. I knew both the boot and bonnet were closed, the light was just staring at me.

Should I still get this checked during service?

Danny - I would say yes - you might want to just have service give it a peak next time you take your MINI in for something...

Chow!

Thanks alot! After holding my MINI's boot closed with a bungie cord all day, I came over here and the "Fonzie slap" worked like a charm! Thanks again!
