Undocumented dash warning light - what is it?

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone can help me with a few questions on a 03 Cooper S.
  1. can someone identify this warning light? (no mention of it in the manual
  2. can someone identify what the switch next to the door locking switch is? It's not the fog lights because that's the next switch to the right.
  3. the manual tells me this button is for cruise control, yet I don't see any steering wheel buttons to set it. What's up with that?

Thanks so much for your help! I didn't pay close enough attention to the dimmer button & thought it was cruise control Strange that the dash light is for brakes because that's what was initially thought it was for. However, the car just had a 4-wheel brake service (new pads, etc) but the light is still on. Does it need to be reset or something?

Nope, there are sensors at the pads that when worn have to be replaced. Sounds like you have one that is bad and needs replacing.

yup, if the pad sensor is worn too much, it will need to be replaced.

D3m0n,

how long am I supposed to leave the ignition on before the light goes off? Its been 10 minutes & the warning light is still on. Further, talking to the mechanic he did mention one of the rear pads was worn really low & was rubbing on the sensor. I don't know if this is normal (in order for the sensor to detect the low pad) or if the rubbing wrecked the sensor.

Thoughts?

then one of your sensors is either disconnected or was not replaced when the brakes were done.

Sometime it can take a drive of up to 30miles for the brake light to reset it's self. Thats how my car works, i take it for a ride after replacing the sensor and it goes off in 5 miles.

Thank for all the help! There's seems to be no consensus on whether the sensor(s) is shot & needs to be replaced or if it simply needs to be reset (via a drive). Either way I will take it for a drive in the next day or two & will let you guys know what happens.

Cheers!

It will not reset with a drive. Once the sensor is tripped, the entire sensor unit has to be replaced for the light to go out. Drive it all you want, but that light is on until you buy a new sensor.

Hello everybody,

Mine is 03 Cooper and it doesn't have #1 light. It's just black big dot and nothing comes on when I turn on the engine. Even you can see the silhouette what that lamp is for without turning on, but that big dot is empty.

Does this mean that I don't have a brake pad sensor?

Thanks in advance.
