Soft Rear Bumper

last night i parked my car at my gf's place. This morning i noticed someone had bumped into the rear bumper with their car. Left scratches and a flatten portion on the bumper .

When trying to polish off whatever residue from the impact, i noticed the rear bumper is pretty flimsy. Looked under the bumper, there isn't any renforcement except for one thin bracket on the right side of the bumber .

Is this actually normal or safe????????

It's actually just a bumper trim cover. Underneath is a true metal bumper attached to the chassis. You can see pictures in the install directions for the trailer hitch at minidomore.com

Sorry about the damage. My bumpers are pretty messed up after months of street parking in the city.

The lower part of the bumper is just thin plastic. That's not where it gets hit in a collision.

Tried polishing it out yesterday.... The paint from the other car is out but what's left behind are minor scratches..... not really visible unless you look right at it. The part that hurts is that the plastic bumper now has a crease on it from the impact.

Unfortunately some people just can't park. They think that bumpers are literally for "bumping" when parking. Sorry for your damage.
I just had the rear bumper on my DD, a Prius, repainted because some idiot hit it when parking her 13' car in a 12' stall behind me. Fortunately I caught her in the act and her insurance paid for the damage and rental car.
Those are the type of drivers who need to be held accountable for their poor driving skills. Make them pay!
