overheating when running in high temp days with the A/C on?
Today it is 109F and in stop and go traffic some cars just cant handle
this kind of heat...Is the case with the MINI S?
Will a JCW MCS be able to handle this kind of heat with A/C on?

what are the experiences you folks are finding!

the reason I was asking is that this morning a friend in his 95
Toyota Supra non Turbo took me on a bash that MINI desire Out of you trip. He let
me put the supra through the paces in the foothills around 9:30 with the mercury at
100F He turned the A/C and said Let's see your MINI match this and we continued to carve
I was amazed the Temp gauge didnt move much pass 175, in the cool range of the dial.
I still waiting on my MINI so I didnt know what to say...told em I'd ask MCO.
Ryan were you being tongue in cheek. or is there a definite problem, I'd love to search up the answer, but I'm on dial up and its so slow today... I'm sorry for the inconvenice,
just wanted to let him Know the MINI can rock in all weather!

Scout... I don't think problems with the MINI should be your greatest concern. Your friend seems to have some pretty silly problems himself

What does he care what kind of car you purchase? He's not going to be driving it...

There are many people out there who have genuine concerns and questions about the MINI since it is still relativity new to the American market. Not many people have the knowledge and understanding about the car that some of you that live on this board do.

I stop by the board in order to get information about the MINI. To watch someone ask a question and get an answer that is sarcastic and rude to me is unacceptable. If you don't know the answer to the question then don't post anything. What is it to you? Do you all think people are coming to this board purposly asking questions without searching to irritate you? Get real.

Granted, with the hundreds and hundreds of posts here, I'm sure just about any question anyone has regarding the MINI has probably already been asked and answered. So why don't we just lock all the threads and also prevent any new posts from being made since it's all been talked about ok? What would be the purpose of this board then? Let people ask what they want. It doesn't affect your life one way or the other now does it....

Being around message boards for the better part of 8 years now, I understand the reason there are moderators and the reason there are nosey sarcastic individuals. Since you're not the former, you must be the latter.

Let those with the authority use it.

Wow, There's a lot of love on the board this morning. In answer to your original question, my MCS has never reached the half way point on the guage with the A/C on in Florida.

Scout and Minizila:

I don't think the MCS per se is prone to overheating. If all things are functioning properly all shoudl be well. I have only had my MCS at max temps of about 102 degrees, no higher, and usually more in the 90s here on the TX coast. However, humidity is high and I use the AC a lot. Have not had any overheating problems, and temp gauge needle (after replacement for initial fault) always stays in the center, with or w/o AC. AC works plenty well for me, but it does do the silly holwing thing and worse, the vibrations when I turn the AC on. Still checking into that.

Other folks have had various problems that may have led to overheating under some conditions though, check the threads via search. However, AFAIK all these instances were related to some failures or other, such as leaky coolant tank (now solved), and leaking water pump gasket, etc...

Minizilla:
The MINI temp gauge is an idiot style gauge, that is, it does not display real temperature or anything proportional to that. It merely stays (or should stay) centered when temp is in normal range, and above if overheating or below if cold. If your temp gauge never reaches the center, then I would think you have a problem either with a malfunctioning gauge, or with the cooling system (such as a stuck thermostat). I would have it checked out by the dealer!

MG-BGT,
My temp guage reads just a smidge below half. I've had the car for 14 months and 20k miles. I didn't post clearly, sorry. Thanks for your warning of concern.

I live in Las Vegas (hit 116 last week) and drive my MCS pretty hard. I'm yet to see my temp gauge go above the middle.

We've only gotten above 100 a couple times so far this year (with a number of mid to high 90's days). No overheating problems yet.

If you learn the use of the search function, it'll help you out with this and other questions you might have. I'll agree, with a slow connection, it can be a trying situation.

That doesn't excuse the rudeness of the answer by Red03miniS. (the following is directed at him) A legitimate question was asked. Yeah, it may have been asked before, but where do you get off coming out with the crap you wrote? If you can't come up with an answer to a particular question, save the bandwidth, and keep the comments to yourself!

PHX, AZ here. Had 118F day and ran with the AC on with NO overheating problems. My MCS is my daily driver in the Valley of the Sun (PHX) with ~12000 miles on it with no overheating problems

Have the guy in question email me. I can fully explain to him I run my MCS hard and have no overheating issues, even when the AC is on here in the Valley of the Sun.

well i have owned a supra twin turbo, they are great cars. the supra and mini are obviously not in the same class. i have a lexus sc300 (the sister car to the supra, and i say this is the BEST car i ever had, its even better than the mini)
that said, i think all cars made today, run fine with the a/c on. we dont live in the 50s anymore. sure some people have overheating probs with the a/c but a repair can be done under warranty. i have had 0 probs with my mcs. hope that helps

I experienced overheating in stop and go traffic with the A/C on in my MCS. Problem turned out to be one of design. MINI made BOTH the power steering cooling fan and the auxiliary radiator cooling fan run on same 5 amp circuit. If either unit is not functioning properly, "pop" goes the fuse, and the temp will skyrocket. I believe that MINI is now addressing the problem, and saw a thread here that said that there has been a service notice issued. Once cured (my p.s. fan was shorting out the circuit), all is well, even in high temp/humidity conditions.

I live in southern South Carolina where the temps are in the 90s with 90-95% humidity. Engine temp never goes past mid on short or long trips and I have to turn my AC down towards the end of my 15 minute drive home.

Yesterday I did a 350+ mile drive down the middle of Florida on my way home. The digital outside temp read 97 most of the way home. Average speed was over 90+ mph with the climante control A/C set on 70 the whole time. That car did not flinch one bit. A great ride home. And the temp gauge did not move above the mid mark.

My MCS has overheated twice. Both times were in a traffic jam on the highway (behind big wrecks). And both time, the A/C was OFF, but temps were in the 90's.

I am going in for my first service this week and will ask them to look at it.
