I think my hood scoop is melting...
My week 3 baby was in for her oil change (first OFFICIAL), and I asked about the open scoops. She said she'd check about it to see if I could get a new scoop.
Yeah, right. And the Tooth Fairy knows Santa.

It gets VERY hot on and around the scoop, as others have reported. Too hot to keep your finger on it, like a stove. I'd believe the 225-250 degrees others with a thermometer have reported. There is an ever-so-slight, but still noticeable depression in the center of the scoop "rim."

I showed Hubby your comments (and the previous post), and his concern was that opening up the scoop might affect the air flow as it is designed. Which, of course, brings up the possibility that the warranty would be denied if anything showed up relating to the engine or turbo. Comments?

Yes, a friend's newly delivered '08 has this, and I found it just as hot as minie (seemed so, anyway, without a temp gauge). There has to be a better solution.
.. no joke.
A buddy recently asked how my hood scoop got 'dented'... I walked over to check it out, and by golly it does have a slight depression in the right/rear portion of the scoop. Not a big 'dent', but once you notice it, it's definitely there.
I knew it couldn't be 'dented' - since it's plastic, so I popped open the hood, and bingo!.. the indentation is directly over the turbo - just to the right of where the heat shield stops. (I'll shoot some photos so you'll know where I'm describing).
I had the car at the Mini dealer in Winston-Salem last week for some routine service, so I showed the service writer. He agreed.. so they're going to warranty my hood scoop (which will need painting once it arrives).
Anybody else notice the same thing happening to your scoop? I've been told that there's a mod to the scoop to eliminate this from happening, but I'm not sure what the mod is. I may take my Dremel and open some of the holes in the black plastic scoop filler to help vent the hot air.

WOW and its not even functional.
Why do people keep saying this?
It IS functional when open, as the later builds are. Only the earliest cars have closed scoops. I have a week 3 build and I want to change scoops due to heat.

Mine is an early build and had same issue. Before, the annual servicing, I asked them about replacing it. They claimed to be "unaware" of the issue and suggested might be bad manufacturing of the part. However, they did replace the hood scoop after I emailed them a few pictures of it. Unfortunately, carbon black was 300.00 and is too pricey for me. I was told that they would keep replacing it anytime it happened.
Yes; I quit.

It is fully functional thermal dissapation port
