That is odd as the replacement hood scoop should have been ordered semi opened not fully closed like your original one you had. Then there wouldn't have been any need to remove the screen completely.I would tell your SA to order the correct one instead of trying to modify it.Which should be covered under the factory warranty anyway.
I'm happy, though--I'd rather not have the problem again.

Hood Scoop replaced with CF Scoop
I recently had the hood scoop replaced under warranty with the CF scoop by simply paying the difference. I also added additional insulation under the bonnet.
The big piece on the hood is "Dynamat Hood Liner". The smaller piece is" Thermo Tec 13575 Adhesive Backed Heat Barrier (heat rated to 2000 Deg F). I found both on Amazon. Pieces were custom cut to fit.
I also added the M7 Heat Shield!!!
I am hoping this will eliminate any problems with the hood scoop melting. With the addition of the JCW Tuning Kit I suspect the turbo will be producing a bit more heat.

Well, let's HOPE it fixes the problem. From what I've read on this and the other scoop threads, though, with the screen removed the temperature really drops.
BTW, the warped scoop made a great dummy gift for the Christmas party's White Elephant exchange.

I wasn't as lucky with last year's W.E. gift, though. I got an air intake something for an '05. Fortunately, I managed to unload it on another chatline, though at a net loss. Such is life.
(THIS year I got a cup holder...for an R53. Still trying to dump it. Anyone need one?)

I'd say that's definitely the chrome delaminating from the scoop, it's probably a pretty thick layer if you can't push it down with your finger. That would be consistent with the scoop overheating and drooping like you describe.
I've got an M7 heat shield in place to prevent this from happening again.

The reflective shield reflects the heat away from the adhesive and foam.
I know that my hood stays much cooler now and that is a good thing for paint.

Another Melted Hood Scoop
Add my Wife's 2007 MCS to the melted hood scoop club. Top dead center. Ours came with the partially openned scoop, but no joy. Just noticed it last week after keeping a close eye on it for the last year. Took 14 months but it's definitely there now. I figured Bakersfield summer temps might do the job, but it made it through the summer OK, go figure. Probably fortunate timing, my warrenty is up in another 4000 miles. (Extended Warrenty kicks in after that.) I'll be calling the dealer this week. Ugh!

You've certainly piled on the miles! Hint--be ABSOLUTELY SURE you have that car in before the warranty expires. I had a BMW 530i that had something go wrong. Can't remember what, but it was a few hundred dollars worth. I called my service writer and told her that I wanted to put it on record, so to speak, until I could get in. She said it had to be in their driveway by the time the warranty expired, or they wouldn't cover it. It was, by about 20 miles...

Yeah, we average 20-25K miles/year. But this thing is so fun to drive we had nearly 30K the first year and much of that was on $5.00/gal. gas. Hate to think what it would have on it if fuel $ was where it is now! Thanks for the heads up on the warrenty notification. I kind of figured that's the way it would go down though. Anyone had a dealer squawk about warrenty issues over a reflective hood blanket or an M7 heat shield?

Melting Scoops
tkwasny--thanks for your support. A couple of points:
You mention that there were changes from 2007 to 2008. Are you referring to the "opening" of the scoop grill? If that's the case, they actually did that in mid-07. Unfortunately it didn't make a difference. And I have 2 friends with '08s, and both have had exactly the same degree of deformation that I have, and that has been shown in the photos of this thread. (Their scoops have been replaced, but I don't know how the new ones are faring.)
My second point is that we can't count on BMW/MINI continuing to support us after the warranty runs out, even though we may report it. A case in point: We also have a 2001 530i. Something went wrong on it--I can't remember what, but it was about $250 to repair. We were very close to the end of the line with our warranty, so I called our service writer and told her about it when I made the appointment, figuring that I would preserve our rights. Didn't work that way. I was told that our car had to be in their driveway BEFORE the warranty ran out, or they wouldn't pay for it. And it was--all of TWENTY (20) miles before the cut-off.
Given the scope of this problem, we might not have that hard-line handling, but I'm not counting on it. I plan to replace it now, at Zippeee!'s next oil change--this week or next--and hope that will give me a chance to make sure the next one doesn't go bad before I'm out of luck.
BTW, does anyone know this--if the scoop is replaced, is the "grill" replaced also? Mine has the totally closed type.
