My MINI is in the shop today for this problem and I have a CVT loaner car.

I'll keep you posted on what they fix.

Update: Schomp MINI here in Denver called me. They replaced the power steering pump. I'm headed over there at lunch to pick it up.

Haven't had the PS or PS Fan to go out on mine. I did, however, install the Moss Motors PS Fan Guard this afternoon. The outside temp is currently 96 degrees. After installation, took it out and ran it for about 30 minutes. Did not seem to have any problems....But, best not talk too much..

I have the SS Moss plate, and my steering pump went out twice in HARD driving in 95 degree desert weather. It came back quickly and I am sure there is a thermal cut-out switch with auto-reset (think garbage disposal) in there. I will further ventilate my plate, and add heat sink to the motor casing.

Had the exact same problem with some HARD canyon driving in about 90 degree temp. I have the moss plate as well . After about 30 min steering locked up, waited for about 5 min was all better.Drove another 10 min and it did it again. Waited and just cruised the rest of the way home with no problem since them.Same thing happeend to a CVT cooper as well with no skid plate. It is a heat problem with the pump and the fluid temp. I called one of my sponsors about it and they too had the same problem with their track car. They have created a product to solve the problem but cant get to production until after the SEMA show. I cant say more than they have a fix for this but we have about 6 weeks to wait. I will post info as soon as i am allowed , Randy

Can this event be isolated to a particular batch of PS pumps or Fans. I see some folks with problems and others in no problems. I can see the reason for a thermal cut off in the PS. But, the PS cutting off during mountain driving or high altitude conditions is nutts ... unless you are driving your Mini at 35,000 feet. I have driven my '04 MCS in puddles and in the bumper to bumper traffic PS works (crossing fingers and it type).

Cheers
