Need Help - P1685 code

It is cold in northern VA....

This morning, I am on a 55 mph limited access road. After stopping for a light, my 04 MCS throws an SES light as well as the EML light. The car has no power and I would assume it is in "limp" mode as I cannot get the engine above 2k rpm. I pull over to the side and shut the engine down. Checking my ScanGuageII, I see a P1685 code. I clear the code, start the engine again and everything seems fine. Get back in traffic and I am okay until the next light, where I come to a full stop. Just as I take off when the traffic light turns green, it throws the same code again (car goes in limp mode again). Again, pull over, shut down the engine, checked under the hood (nothing usual..), restart and everything is fine for the next hour. About an hour later, this happens again, but went through the cycle for the third time and make it home with no further excitement.

I checked the forums for the P1685 codes and the only thing I find is in the BMW forum where the code is translated as a "Metering Oil pump stepping motor circuit malfunction" code. Not sure what this means, but the fact that it mentions "oil pump" has me spooked. I did check the oil and it seems to be fine...

I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on what is happening here.
My car is under warranty until March, so it looks like a call to the dealership is in order first thing tomorrow....

Looks like an electrical component malfunction. Get to dealer ASAP.

The MINI faut code is Electronic Throttle Control Moinitor 2/3 Clutch Torque Max Error. Probably an issue with EDR, info can be found in the Bentley Service Manual, for background start with page 130-10 (2002-2004 book) and read through 130-23.

Check connectors (un-plug/plug-in), throttle body and every sensor you see; just as a matter of course in trouble shooting.

k-huevo -

Thanks for the clarification on the code. It sounds better than what I originally thought it might be. Unfortunately, I do not have the Bentley manual. Currently, the EML light is clear. I did not clear the SES code as I want the dealer to see for themselves (provided I can get an appointment).
Tomorrow, I plan to stop by the dealership to see if they can take me in tomorrow. Hopefully, it is a simple fix....

This is nuts.
I was driving through Northern VA this morning, after coming back from Philly after my tune with Jan, on the way to Roanoke, VA.
And this exact code pops up on the scanner right when i stopped at a gas station in Northern Va.
When i came to a stop at the gas station, my car was idling funny (around 1200rpms).
Turned it off. And back on and all is good, drove another 200 miles and its still all good.
I am hoping it was just the cold weather!
Let me know what the dealer says it is!

I have an 04 MCS & I'm experiencing the same symptoms after my tune w/ Jan in Dallas. After my first test drive of the tune, Jan warned it might throw a code & that he would adjust the tune accordingly to take care of it. I can't remember how the engine acted when the code popped up but it was either P1685 "Electronic Throttle Control Monitor Level 2/3 Clutch Torque Max Error" or P1689 "Electronic Throttle Control Monitor Level 2/3 Torque Calculation Error"

At any rate, he adjusted at the tune & it disappeared but this code P1685 resurfaced a month later accompanied by limp mode. I cleared it & ran for three days no worries except for the weird idling surge. I went into limp mode yesterday w/ multiple codes...(overboost, cat converter operating below efficiency, max voltage exceeded & P057 which when googled comes up "shorted transaxle temp sensor" which we don't have, of course - that one for a 95 caddie) heading out to the mechanic's tomorrow...Not happy!

I just got the same code P1685 this morning (I got tuned on Jan 14 by Jan at Helix). No problems whatsoever until this morning. It is 11 degrees this morning, which it has not reached to my knowledge since Jan. 14). I stopped, restarted and was fine, but after another 2 mins, I was back in limp mode.

I will try warming the car tonight on the way home.

the fix....

PM sent with history of what happened.

Long story short: I got the RMW tune on January 18 at Helix and had to revisit Helix to re-evaluate the problem. My case was probably the most extreme that Jan knows about since others just throw it once in a blue moon.
As I understand it, he removed the ASC/DSC disable feature on takeoffs and I have not thrown the code since.....

Hope this helps....

Thanks for keepin us in the loop, Peter. My P1685 disappeared when the temp went up (my other codes were other problems now resolved) But Jan's coming thru Dallas soon & I hope to get it re-flashed then!

So how did you get the P1685 code to go away? Just curious, as I have the same right now and I need to pick some brains about it.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you... I sold the MINI awhile back and I honestly don't remember the outcome details of this particular SNAFU with the codes. If I had to guess, I think I also had to replace the O2 sensor at the time... Wish I couldn't have been more help. Good Luck!
